in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The GOP-controlled House of Representatives passed two immigration-related bills Thursday afternoon. One was Kate’s Law, which mandates a minimum five-year prison sentence for anyone who re-enters the country illegally at least twice after being deported. It passed the House of Representatives on Thursday with a vote of 257 to 157. The No Sanctuary for Criminals Act passed by a 228-195 margin. Both votes were mostly along party lines, but not in Florida. Only seven Republicans voted against the No Sanctuary for…

Polk County Republican Dennis Ross and Tampa Democrat Kathy Castor are sponsors of the Flood Insurance Market Parity and Modernization Act, which now goes to the full House for consideration. Kathy Castor puts faith in Senate GOP to resist completely repealing Dodd-Frank

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Last week, the GOP-led House of Representatives voted to repeal many of the stricter regulations enacted after the 2008 financial crisis. It was part of a desire to roll back rules that they say have hurt banks, restricted consumer growth and slowed economic progress. Democrats disagree, as each one voted against the bill. “I think the memories of politicians in Washington D. C. are very short,” Tampa Representative Kathy Castor told FloridaPolitics.com earlier this week. “I remember sitting across from many of…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Charlie Crist took to the floor of the U.S. House on Thursday to blast the Financial CHOICE Act, a Republican-sponsored bill that would undo significant parts of the Dodd-Frank financial reforms implemented the wake of the Great Recession.. “Unrestrained greed on Wall Street caused a preventable disaster because at no point did anyone say: This is simply wrong,” Crist said before the House approved the measure. “I remember 2008 and 2009: the bailouts, the foreclosures, the long, painful road to recovery,” he said. “The…

Joe Henderson: GOP still thumb-sucking about Obamacare, but where’s a real plan to fix it?

in 2017 by

A tweet Wednesday from U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross of Florida’s 15th Congressional District repeated the dutiful Republican yadda-yadda about the Affordable Care Act. “Another insurer pulls out of Obamacare. Now 18 counties in Ohio have zero insurance options. Missouri facing same situation,” Ross wrote. Yeah, OK. Been there, heard that. Over and over and over again. With nothing better to say, Republican leaders sound like they’re back on the campaign trail. Judging by the responses to Ross’ tweet though, I…

Activist group targets Republican Dennis Ross for ‘Putin us off’

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Polk County Republican Dennis Ross handily won his Congressional District 15 seat each of the four times he’s been on the ballot since 2010, but Democrats seem particularly energized about challenging him in 2018. As previously reported by FloridaPolitics, no fewer than five Democrats have already filed to run in a primary next year with the winner getting the opportunity to take on Ross in November of 2018. Indivisible East Hillsborough County is an activist group formed after last year’s presidential election. Frustrated by what they say…
