While the nation eagerly looks forward to next Monday night’s first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the Tampa Bay area has its own Great Debate taking place Monday night at the Palladium Theater in St. Petersburg. That’s where David Jolly and Charlie Crist will hold their first debate in the Florida 13th Congressional District race. The event is sold out, but will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. on WTSP-10 News, moderated by the Tampa Bay Times political editor Adam C. Smith, and WTSP news anchor/reporter Mark Rivera.…

Bob Buckhorn says it’s all about loyalty as he backs Tom Scott in Democratic Hillsborough Commissioners race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Bob Buckhorn says he likes “most” of the four Democrats running for the Hillsborough County Commission District 6 race that climaxes next Tuesday, but it’s his sense of friendship and loyalty that has him backing Tom Scott. Scott previously served on the County Commissioner from 1996 to 2006, followed by one term on the Tampa City Council from 2007-2011. He then ran for mayor in 2011, but afterfailing to get into a runoff, he ended up backing Buckhorn. Buckhorn had narrowly made the…

Dick Greco backing Augie Riberio in SD 19 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Former Tampa Mayor Dick Greco, a registered Democrat who hasn’t made a habit out of endorsing other Democrats of late, did so on Thursday by announcing his support for civil justice lawyer Augie Ribeiro in the Senate District 19 race. “I know Augie Ribeiro well. I know his family, I know his values, and I know his heart,” said Greco in a statement issued by the Ribeiro campaign. “He has spent his life standing up for regular people and hardworking families,…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.1.16 — The wheels of justice move excruciatingly slow

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

American celebrates its 240th birthday on Monday, and the 40th anniversary of the Bicentennial. I was a relatively young kid who doesn’t have a whole lot of recollection of that particular day (other than our family was on vacation someplace in Northern California), but I certainly do remember the yearlong hype into that summer. Two days ago in this space we commented on the length of the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton‘s emails at the State Department, and what was…

Dick Greco is backing Shawn Harrison in the HD 63 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Battling in an extremely competitive election this fall against Lisa Montelione, House District 63 Republican Representative Shawn Harrison has procured another Democrat to back his re-election campaign. It’s former Tampa Mayor Dick Greco. “I’ve had the honor to serve our city and region for four terms as Mayor, over several decades. During that time, I’ve had the privilege to work with some outstanding and selfless men and women who represented their constituents with honor, dignity, and tenacity,” Greco said in a statement.…

Mitch Perry Report for 11.11.15 — The return of Rand Paul to the GOP presidential race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The odds were stacked against him last night, and there were many who were writing him off before last night’s debate. And yet he had a breakthrough performance at the GOP’s 4th presidential debate in Milwaukee. Jeb Bush? No, Rand Paul. Paul’s been down so far this election cycle that the only stories you seem to read about him these days are when he’s going to quit and concentrate on being re-elected to the Senate in Kentucky. But for one…

Dick Greco on voting outside of Tampa for the first time in his life

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In Tampa, there was a minor ripple in the political class earlier this year when it was reported that Dick Greco was moving with his wife Linda McClintock to St. Petersburg, though the two would continue to work in Tampa. For some longtime observers, it was almost heretical to learn that the man who served in four different terms as the mayor of Tampa (and tried again for a fifth in 2011) was deserting the Cigar City for the hipper…
