in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Two potential heirs to the much-discussed 5th Congressional District long held by U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown have confirmed they are sizing up the seat should it become available. “Absolutely,” said state Rep. Mia Jones, one of four veteran Jacksonville politicians seen as a viable contender to run in Brown’s stead. The others are former Jax Mayor Alvin Brown, state Sen. Audrey Gibson, and former state Sen. Tony Hill. “I believe that you have to keep all options open, and it would…

Secretary of state: No major problems as Florida polls open

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Secretary of State Ken Detzner says he wants to show the country that Florida knows how to run elections. And early indications are there have been no major problems. Detzner told reporters Tuesday that all 5,810 precincts are open and “by all accounts” early voting went smoothly with no reported incidents. Not that there weren’t minor glitches but none stopped voters from casting ballots. In Duval County, there was an issue with electronic poll books. Election workers switched over to…

Failing grade? Trial over Florida’s schools finally starts

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A potentially far-reaching trial that will determine whether the Florida Legislature is shortchanging public schools is starting in a Tallahassee courtroom. In the lawsuit filed six years ago, education groups and parents from Duval and Pasco counties contend the Legislature and state officials have not provided enough money to the state’s schools as required under a constitutional amendment passed in 1998. In a revision issued less than two and a half hours before the meeting was slated to take place, the office of Gov. Rick Scott released an amended daily schedule that includes a 3 p.m. meeting with Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, a defendant in a lawsuit Scott filed last year in the latest episode of Florida’s decades-long “water wars” with neighboring Georgia and Alabama. The delayed transparency may not be entirely on Scott’s end, however: Deal is reportedly going about a series…

Today on Context Florida: Lenny Curry, Big Sugar, free parking and standardized test fail

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: Bob Sparks says Lenny Curry’s victory in Jacksonville last night shows Republicans the way to win. The political class is analyzing whether Curry’s win gives Republicans any advantage next year in the quest to capture Florida’s 29 electoral votes or to hold a U.S. Senate seat. Since Jacksonville and Duval County usually go Republican (Barack Obama lost this area twice), a Democrat winning twice in non-presidential election years would certainly give the GOP some cause for concern.…

Today on Context Florida: Pot and 2016, existing projects, financial literacy and online voter registration

Today on Context Florida: Medical marijuana amendment could sway 2016 presidential election, says former Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp. If the Florida Legislature fails to pass a medical marijuana bill this session the issue is almost certain to resurface as a proposed constitutional amendment. However, it is widely believed that in a presidential election cycle (when Democrats in Florida turn out by 4-6 percent more than in non-presidential election cycles) a medical marijuana amendment will pass. The emails are puzzling. The subject…
