Ed Narain tries to find the silver lining in his narrow loss to Darryl Rouson in SD 19 contest

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

State House District 61 Rep. Ed Narain admits his narrow loss to Darryl Rouson for the Senate District 19 seat was painful, but he’s choosing to look on the bright side. “While I wouldn’t be completely honest if I wrote that losing this race so closely wasn’t very disappointing, my faith allows me to believe that there is always a silver lining in any dark cloud,” Narain said in a statement issued to supporters on Tuesday. According to the state Division…

It’s (virtually) official: Darryl Rouson has won the SD 19 Dem primary over Ed Narain

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

With machine and manual recounts now finished in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, Darryl Rouson is the winner in the Democratic primary for Senate District 19. He defeated Ed Narain by a mere 66 votes (that’s what the Rouson campaign told us. The Florida Division of Elections website shows the difference to be 77 votes. The Tampa Bay Times reports that Rouson received 73 more votes than Narain). Rouson has been all but officially declared the victor. He now faces a general election foe…

Mitch Perry Report for 9.2.16 – Tampa City Council approves $251 million to improve stormwater system

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

They did it last night. After nearly four hours of discussion, the Tampa City Council voted 4-2 to support the biggest infusion of taxpayer dollars ever to attempt to improve the city’s stormwater infrastructure, which for decades has been a major problem in the city. Mike Suarez, Lisa Montelione, Harry Cohen and swing vote Guido Maniscalco opted to support Mayor Bob Buckhorn‘s proposal, nearly a year after they rejected a similar one. Councilmembers Charlie Miranda and Frank Reddick dissented, while Yolie Capin was not at the meeting. The improvements will be paid for through…

Recount update: Darryl Rouson now leads Ed Narain by 75 votes in SD 19 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

(UPDATE) After provisional ballots were counted by the separate Hillsborough and Pinellas County canvassing boards Thursday, Darryl Rouson’s lead over Ed Narain grew to 75 votes in the race for the Florida state Senate District 19. The contest appears certainly headed for a machine recount on Friday, as the final margin of 75 votes out more than 37,000 cast is less than one-half of the percent required for an automatic recount. Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner made the official call, shortly after 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Roughly three-fourths…

Florida Chamber upbeat despite mixed results in primaries

in Statewide by

The Florida Chamber of Commerce made a big investment in the primary, a move officials said paid off, despite a few notable losses. The Chamber’s political operation announced primary victories for 76 of the 89 candidates it endorsed. Some of those candidates were incumbents; others were involved in uncompetitive primaries. But there were big wins in a few competitive primaries. “We won some, we lost some,” said Marian Johnson, the senior vice president of political strategy for the Florida Chamber.…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.31.16 – Moving on to November

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Good morning, everyone. Florida’s primary election is history. So, where to begin? Patrick Murphy will face Marco Rubio in November. Murphy crushed Alan Grayson, 59  to 18 percent, with Pam Keith a close third at 15 percent. Rubio gets credit for honesty, saying that he can’t say for sure that he’ll fulfill all six years of his term if elected, which naturally Murphy is attempting to exploit. Boy, this race is going to get tawdry. In what has to be considered a mini-upset, St. Petersburg’s Darryl…

Darryl Rouson gets 61 more votes than Ed Narain and is the unofficial winner in SD 19 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After a long delay in collecting some ballots in Hillsborough County, St. Petersburg based attorney and outgoing House District 70 Representative Darryl Rouson has received 61 more votes than Ed Narain in the Senate District 19 Democratic Primary race, out of 37,687 votes cast. Because of the narrow margin, there will likely be an automatic machine recount, but unless something dramatic occurs with the recount, Rouson will have won the primary, and most likely the general in the fall, as the district is overwhelmingly Democratic…
