Bill Nelson again talking the ‘centrist’ talk regarding Supreme Court nominee

in 2017/Statewide by

Senator Bill Nelson does a good job of talking the moderate, bipartisan approach in the U.S. Senate. In the end, he nearly always votes with the liberals in his party. To be sure, Sen. Marco Rubio votes primarily the same way as his Republican colleagues. The difference is Rubio makes no statements about being a centrist. He makes it clear he is a conservative and votes that way. Nelson, who is up for re-election in 2018, has a high-profile vote…

Darryl E. Owens: SCOTUS hits mark for domestic violence with disarming Voisine ruling

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

After the Pulse tragedy, gun control talks predictably spiked. The gun lobby trained its sights on proposals that supposedly kneecapped the Second Amendment. Weary anti-gun violence crusaders petitioned Congress to holster massacres by doing something — anything. Shouting, pleading, debating, cajoling, exhorting — and a brief political theater revival of circa ‘60s sit-ins — appallingly accomplished doodly-squat. America’s firm majority which backs broader gun control measures dejectedly shoveled dirt on the latest prospect of kick-starting congressional inertia. That failure, however,…

Mitch Perry Report for 2.16.16 – Time to stop penalizing indie voters in Florida

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Greetings from the EconoLodge in Tallahassee. A week ago in New Hampshire, tens of thousands of registered independents became Democrats or Republicans for a day (or more accurately, the time it took to cast their vote) so they could vote in the first-in-the-nation presidential primary election. Although some critics scoffed at how influential independents were in the actual vote, the more important fact is that state law in New Hampshire allows registered voters to become party members so they can…

Jeb Bush says President Obama’s judicial nominees have been “way out of the mainstream”

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Jeb Bush says it’s within Barack Obama‘s constitutional powers to nominate a candidate to succeed Antonin Scalia on the U.S. Supreme Court, but says there’s no way that person should be approved by the U.S. Senate. “There should not be an appointment, based on the record of President Obama’s selection of judges,” Bush told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie on the “Today Show” on Monday. “They’re way out of the mainstream, and this should be an important point that we have in…

Wall Street Journal: Anybody but Marco Rubio?

in Statewide by

Party affiliation wasn’t the only thing Gov. Charlie Crist switched when he dropped out of the GOP primary and decided to run as independent in the Florida Senate race. Mr. Crist has piqued the ire of many conservatives by flip-flopping on a number of issues in order to ingratiate himself with liberals. In fact, he’s made so many 180s that many Democrats are now considering throwing their weight and money behind him in order to upend the remaining Republican in…

Time: How Florida’s forgotten Democrat could win the Senate race

in Statewide by

From Time Magazine: It’s only June, but Florida’s three-way U.S. Senate contest is already shaping up as a race to remember. It will have Republican Marco Rubio, the young and formerly unsung conservative who is now widely viewed as the Barack Obama of the tea party movement. It will have Governor Charlie Crist, the former Republican shoo-in who fled the GOP to run as an independent after it became clear that Rubio was cleaning his clock. And it will have…
