Elite 8

Chris Chiozza, Christian Laettner and the forgotten supporting actors

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Christian Laettner, meet Chris Chiozza. Your contributions to March Madness lore may be 25 years apart, but the memories will go on for far longer. Laettner, who was already well-known, made “The Shot,” in 1992 that kept Duke’s hopes alive for a repeat championship, which they won. Chiozza, a popular figure on the Florida campus, but relatively unknown elsewhere, sent the Gators to the Elite 8 on Friday with “The Shot 2.” One should be careful before making comparisons between…

Looking at the box score, it is incredible to believe that Miami not only lost the game, but lost it by 23 points. Over the next two nights, eight games will be played in the NCAA Tournament. When those games are over, we will know the identities of the Elite 8. The odds are strong there will be at least one, if not more, ACC teams among the final eight. No fewer than six ACC schools made the Sweet 16 and none play each other over the next two days. One of those non-ACC teams seeking to survive and advance is the Maryland…

Gators have what it takes to win it all

in Sports/Top Headlines by

To say the Florida Gator baseball team is on a roll just doesn’t seem to fully describe what they are doing to opponents – quality opponents – during the postseason. Their 15-3 mauling of the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday at the College World Series (CWS) in Omaha is just the latest example. To get to baseball’s Elite 8, they twice smacked down arch-rival Florida State in the Super Regional by combined scores of 24-9. During the Gainesville Regional, they won…
