Mitch Perry Report for 5.22.15 — On Donald Trump, James Harden & what local taxpayers should pay for

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to you all, which by the way is the earliest we can ever have such a holiday, with this Monday only being the 25th of May. Incidentally, Labor Day will take place as late as it can be this year (September 7), which will actually be a factor in delaying the NFL season by a week, meaning the regular season won’t end until next January. If one of the prerequisites for being a politician is engaging in a…

Eric Ward confirmed by Tampa City Council as new police chief

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although he’s effectively been on the job for nearly two weeks, Eric Ward did not officially become the current police chief in Tampa until Thursday morning, when the City Council unanimously confirmed his appointment. It came while dozens of his fellow TPD officers crammed into the Council’s intimate chambers to be part of the occasion. The 48-year-old Ward grew up in East Tampa and has served in virtually every position in the department over the past 26 years. He served as…

WTSP: As profits plunge, red light cameras could go dark around Tampa Bay

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Local governments across Florida are reconsidering red light cameras after longer yellow lights statewide reduced the ability to profit off of the program. While politicians hope that terminating contracts will end the controversy, Noah Pransky of WTSP-TV notes that it only adds to the debate: are RLCs actually a safety measure or are they simply for profit? Of every violation — usually a $158 fine — $83 goes to the State of Florida; the remaining $75 goes to pay RLC contracts,…

But he doesn’t think it should hold up the confirmation of newly appointed Police Chief Eric Ward. “I do understand what some of the argument is — that a lot of these gangs are riding these bicycles, and that they (the police) are stopping…

If you were growing weary of reading Jameis Winston vs. Marcus Mariota everyday in your local sports pages for the past four months, Buc fans, congrats. Now you’ll just be reading about Winston everyday up until the season begins. Let’s just hope for all concerned it’s only in the sports pages. Last night the NFL draft’s opening round kicked off in what is considered to be the biggest non-football sports weekend in America this year. In addition to the NBA and NHL…

Two Tampa City Council members say they’ll weigh bike citation policy in approving Eric Ward as new chief

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A half-hour after Eric Ward was named the new police chief for the city of Tampa, two City Council members joined a coalition of activist groups who again called on the Tampa Police Department to temporarily stop their current bike citation policy —  at least until after the U.S. Justice Department finishes its review of the agency’s practices. Council Chairman Frank Reddick and District 7 Council member Lisa Montelione joined members of the ACLU, CAIR, the NAACP and a host of other…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced this afternoon that Eric Ward will become the new Police Chief for the city of Tampa, effective as of next week.
