#1 Ohio State may be second best team in Big 10

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The number one team in the country, according to both major polls, may not be the number one team in their conference. While poll voters give the nod to Ohio State, their arch-rival Michigan is the Big 10 team hitting on all cylinders and the team playing like a championship contender. With their 38-0 shutout of Number 13 Northwestern on Saturday, the 18th ranked Wolverines moved to 5-1. Michigan’s performance was the third consecutive shutout, the first time the Wolverines…

Wake Forest won the game on paper; FSU on the scoreboard

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Mark Twain is often credited with saying there are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies and statistics. Under those criteria, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons beat Florida State on Saturday. The scoreboard, however, provided the truth. Florida State 24, Wake  Forest 16. Wake Forest had the Florida State defense on the field for 60 percent of the game. The Deacons held the ball for 36 minutes to 24 for the Seminoles. They ran 79 plays to 52 for FSU.…

Wake Forest’s mini-dominance over FSU a distant memory

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Perhaps no ACC opponent best exemplified how far the Florida State football program had fallen than the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. From 2006-08, the Seminoles went 0-3 against Wake Forest. Two of those losses came at Doak Campbell Stadium, including a 30-0 shellacking in 2006 that sent the alumni and boosters into a frenzy. It was the first shutout at home in Bobby Bowden’s long career in Tallahassee. While giving Wake proper props, Florida State simply does not lose like…

FSU gets a kick (or two) out of Cason Beatty

in Sports/Top Headlines by

When the punter is awarded the game ball, your team either lost or struggled on offense, or both. Fortunately for Florida State, only one of the above was true as they managed to escape Alumni Stadium and the Boston College Eagles, 14-0. Teams normally celebrate when they gain yardage through the air in large chunks. The high-fives are lowered a bit when the player putting the ball in the air is the punter. Cason Beatty, FSU’s punter, quite simply had…

USF had its chances against FSU

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Florida State Coach Jimbo Fisher could not have been happy at halftime of FSU’s game with the South Florida Bulls. They were being outplayed by USF. The Seminoles went on to win the game, 34-14, but they were fortunate to enter the locker room at the half tied with the Bulls at 7-7. USF’s defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage in the first half except for one 76-yard burst by Dalvin Cook. Florida State Quarterback Everett Golson completed one pass.…

Dalvin Cook, Mario Pender give No. 10 Florida State options in run game

in Sports/Top Headlines by

With a lot of the preseason attention at Florida State focused on the quarterback competition, the running game was slightly overlooked. By everyone it seems except Jimbo Fisher. The coach of the 10th-ranked Seminoles turned to Dalvin Cook and Mario Pender in Saturday’s opener against Texas State, mainly kept it on the ground with 23 of the first 32 plays being runs. Cook and Pender allowed Everett Golson to settle in and gain confidence as the game went along. The…

First weekend of college football by the numbers

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The opening weekend of the college football season produced some eye-popping numbers. We know that Florida State and South Florida posted 59 and 51 points, respectively. Florida put up 61 points on New Mexico State and Miami scored 45 points while shutting out Bethune-Cookman. What are some other numbers worthy of mention? 233  Yards in punt returns by Maryland’s William Likely in the Terrapins’ 50-21 romp over the Richmond Spiders. Likely’s outburst set an all-time Big 10 record. Maryland is…
