Solar power amendment opponent says its passage would cost ratepayers $1.1 billion

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The ballot initiative that would increase access to solar power in Florida next year has faced intense opposition from the public utilities and big business all year long. One of those opponents is The James Madison Institute (JMI), a conservative think-tank based in Tallahassee. The group released a report on Wednesday claiming that if the amendment — led by the group Floridians for Solar Choice — were to pass in 2016, it would shift $1.1 billion in costs to ratepayers. “This proposed…

Today on Context Florida: Killing in God’s name, Kurly’s latke recipe and defending our Constitutions

in Apolitical by

Today on Context Florida: There has been a lot of talk about mass shootings and the Second Amendment. Jac VerSteeg asks us to talk a little bit about mass shootings and the First Amendment. The First Amendment is a sweeping guarantee of rights for individuals, churches and the press. There are limits to the free exercise of religion, VerSteeg says. Courts have intervened, for example, when parents have refused to seek medical treatment for children because they believe God should do…

Diane Roberts: Charm and grace again flow downhill from Capitol

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

OCCUPIED TALLAHASSEE – Another Special Session! Why, it’s just like Christmas – minus the joy. Minus the presents, too. While the members of the Florida Legislature rake in lobbyist largesse during committee weeks and every other hour that God sends, trawling for dollars during a Session is verboten. This makes them surly. Surlier. They aren’t exactly enjoying being forced to revisit redistricting for about the 400th time since the spring. No one expects the Special Session, which is supposed to…

Diane Roberts: The unavoidable subject of stupid

in Top Headlines by

OCCUPIED TALLAHASSEE – Which is worse: stupid and evil or smart and evil? It’s a thought experiment: you can apply it to, say, George W. and Jeb Bush, Rick Scott and Adam Putnam, the Florida House and – Jesus, those idiots don’t deserve to be in the same paragraph as the word “thought.” But while we’re on the unavoidable subject of stupid: remember the amendment to the state constitution passed by an overwhelming margin last year? You probably voted for…

Senate candidate Paul Phillips comments on veto of HB 1143

in Statewide by

Normally I wouldn’t publish such a long press release, but Paul Phillip’s response to the veto of HB 1143 is so articulate and such a good read, I am compelled to share it with my readers: I take issue with the many candidates and politicians glomming on to Charlie Crist’s veto of House Bill 1143 (HB 1143) and focusing only on the Ultrasound issue. Their arguments are often weak, unfounded, and illogical, wreaking of emotionalism and conjecture. It is apparent…
