Ben Pollara: Stephen Bittel only choice to lead Florida Dems out of desolation, irrelevancy

in 2017/Top Headlines by

I won’t be in Orlando this weekend to vote for the next chair of the Florida Democratic Party. I’m not a state committeeman, so I don’t even have a vote. But I certainly have an opinion on who should lead the political party that I’ve been a member of, and heavily involved with, since I first registered to vote at 18. Stephen Bittel is unequivocally the best candidate for the job and the only candidate capable of effecting the sort…

Stephen Bittel makes official his run for Florida Dems’ chair

in Statewide by

Fresh off his step-three victory last week among Miami Democrats, Stephen Bittel has formally launched his candidacy to become chairman of the Florida Democratic Party. Bittel announced his candidacy Tuesday, though he’s been securing endorsements and backing for weeks for the vacancy created by the departure of FDP Chairwoman Allison Tant. The Democrats will select their new leader Jan. 14. Bittel has been among several prominent Democratic activists around the state trying just to qualify for the opportunity to run…

Carlos Nathan: An open letter to Florida Democrats

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

“What we have here is a failure to communicate.” That quote from “Cool Hand Luke” could be directed squarely at the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party has been suffering from this issue and a message problem since 1998. The performance of the Florida Democratic Party has led to a complete Republican dominance in both the Legislature and the Governor’s mansion. In 2008, Florida helped elect a young, vibrant senator to the highest office in this land under the premise of…

Tallahassee residency case becomes statewide issue

in Statewide by

Tallahassee City Commissioner Scott Maddox lives in the City of Tallahassee. While that should not come as man-bites-dog news, it’s not that simple in Florida’s capital. The residency of the former Tallahassee Mayor and Florida Democratic Party Chair was challenged in court by Dr. Erwin Jackson, a frequent city government and Maddox critic. Maddox maintains two domiciles; a rented home within the city limits and another larger residence outside the city, which he owns. The home outside the city limits was…

Republican Shawn Harrison held on in a rough-and-tumble race against challenger Lisa Montelione to represent House District 63. With all precincts reporting, Harrison had 51 percent of 71,483 votes cast. Montelione held a close early lead but Harrison overcame that and steadily pulled ahead as the night progressed. “Obviously, we’re very happy,” Harrison said in a statement. “We executed what was a perfect game plan. We had a very targeted and specific message to Democrats in this district, and we…

Optimism holds that 2012’s three-hour and longer voter lines will not reappear

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The record voter turnouts being seen in Orange, Osceola, and many other counties for early- and mail-in voting is offering the best hope that Tuesday Florida might not see many or any of the disastrous and embarrassing three-, four-, and five-hour voting lines that plagued key precincts in the presidential election of 2012. You remember 2012: while voting went relatively smoothly in most of Florida’s 67 counties and in the majority of its precincts, enormous crunches hit others in that…

Democrats take the lead in pre-Election Day votes

in 2017 by

Florida Democrats have surpassed Republicans in pre-election totals, aided in large part by turnout during the early voting period. Data compiled by the Florida Chamber of Commerce show nearly 2.1 million Democrats and nearly 2.1 million Republicans have already voted this election cycle. According to the Chamber data, Democrats now lead Republicans by a margin of about 2,600 votes. Democrats still trail Republicans in the vote-by-mail race, returning 919,091 ballots. Registered Republicans have returned 988,579 ballots, giving them a vote-by-mail…
