Even without Marlon Mack, Bulls roll over Northern Illinois

in Sports/Top Headlines by

So much for the Mack Attack. The USF Bulls, playing without two-time conference rushing leader Marlon Mack, still steamrolled to a big win over Northern Illinois Saturday night, 48-17. Northern Illinois had played in six straight Mid-America Championship games, so it figured to give to Bulls a game. That didn’t happen. Quarterback Quinton Flowers threw for 350 yards and four touchdowns. He added 53 more yards rushing. Without Mack, the Bulls turned to backups Darius Tice and D’Ernest Johnson. Tice…

USF shows off weapons in easy victory over Towson

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For USF, the challenge might be to figure out how to blend all of its talent. Which, as they say, isn’t a bad problem to have. The Bulls opened their 2015 season Saturday night with a 56-20 victory over Towson, even though none of stars seemed to have a huge night. Quarterback Quinton Flowers, for instance, ย threw for only 178 yards. He did throw two touchdown passes and run for two more. Running back Marlon Mack had only 58 yards,…

The past is good. But how about the present? After a week of reflecting back on the best quarterbacks to play for each program, isn’t it time to wonder about the season to come? And, specifically, do the programs of Florida have enough quarterbacking to make runs at their conference titles? Certainly, they will not be quarterback-driven teams. Florida’s schools are hoping for surprises (such as the Gators’ Will Grier was last year before his PED suspension). They’re hoping for…

He hit nine of 16 for 157 yards, including a 65-yard pass to Rodney Adams. Then there was linebacker Auggie Sanchez (two interceptions), and Bruce…

USF seeks faster start under coach Willie Taggart this season

in Sports/Top Headlines by

This time, USF will try to have a faster start as it tries to recreate its success from a year ago. USF won its last eight regular season games a year ago, but the Bulls began the season only 1-3. It won’t be a lot easier this time, either. After games against Towson and Northern Illinois, the Bulls travel to Syracuse, host FSU and travel to Cincinnati. Following is a game against UConn, at Temple, Navy, at Memphis, at SMU…

WKU’s Brandon Doughty riddles USF’s secondary in Miami Beach Bowl

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Brandon Doughty is so good, he can give his opponent a head start and still win. Doughty, playing his final game for Western Kentucky, spotted USF a 14-0 lead and spent much of the first half looking spotty. However, he ended up hitting 32 of 45 passes for 461 yards and three touchdowns to lead his team to a 45-35 win over USF. The Bulls’ secondary never had a chance. Nicholas Norris caught five of Doughty’s passes for 120 yards…
