in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It is Earth Day today, the 45th anniversary of the 1970 celebration, and President Obama is marking the occasion by visiting the Sunshine State today, down at the Everglades. In his weekly radio address broadcast last Saturday, Obama discussed the threat of climate change in South Florida, saying that “rising sea levels are putting a national treasure — and an economic engine for the South Florida tourism industry — at risk.” He went on to say that “the world’s top climate…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.2.15 — Florida Republicans and immigration

in Top Headlines by

There’s lot of stories in the news this week about the Republican Party and social issues. Both Mike Pence in Indiana (considered a 2016 presidential possibility) and Asa Hutchison in Arkansas have asked for tweaks in their Religious Freedom Restoration Act bills, after the firestorm it’s created nationally, particularly amongst business groups. Another issue that the Republicans have had to dance with carefully on is immigration, where there has always been a schism between the business side of the party and…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It’s the first full weekend of the NCAA Basketball tournament, the time when some writers wax absurd about “brackets” and “the insanity of March Madness.” And yes, there were a couple of thrilling upsets and buzzard-beaters yesterday to begin the first full day of the 68-team championship. As a basketball aficionado, however, I’ve been calling out the college game for several years now as being a severely weakened product, and thankfully, the mainstream media is finally getting the picture. As…

The Tampa City Council argues about diversity vs. status quo in choosing who will lead them

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa City Council has an election every year to choose a new chairperson. But the majority has chosen the status quo in recent years, continuing to choose longtime member Charlie Miranda as their leader, with nary a vote for any of the other six members on the board. That lack of diversity in leadership has bothered a few members of the Council, leading to a proposal today by Councilwoman Yolie Capin that would place a limit of one year…
