Bob Buckhorn crosses party lines to help Shawn Harrison’s bid for re-election

In 2016, Democrats targeted a handful of Florida House districts they believed they could flip from red to blue. One of them was Hillsborough County’s House District 63, where the Florida Democratic Party put some money behind Lisa Montelione in her bid to oust Republican incumbent Shawn Harrison. After a close race, Harrison ultimately prevailed, 51 to 49 percent. Although off-year elections are traditionally harder for Democrats, there is hope that an energetic resistance to Donald Trump could make 2018 a year of opportunity.…

For many, Tampa’s 2021 Super Bowl is unexpected ‘big win.’ Others remain skeptical.

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Members of Tampa’s political, business, media and activist communities weighed in Wednesday on the surprising news that Tampa will host the Super Bowl in February 2021. The announcement was unexpected, particularly after the NFL snubbed a local bid last year to host the big game in either 2019, 2020 and 2021. But major rainstorms in Southern California throughout the past year delayed construction of a new stadium for the L.A. Rams and Chargers, forcing the NFL to choose a new town…

Tampa to face new financial challenges even before potential 2018 ballot measure hits

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The Florida Legislature’s approval of a constitutional amendment for the 2018 ballot that could severely reduce the level of revenue coming to local governments is just the latest challenge to Tampa’s fiscal health, Chief Financial Officer Sonya Little told the City Council Thursday. If passed by voters, the measure would expand the state homestead property tax exemption to $75,000. Over 4 million Floridians currently receive the current homestead exemption, which lowers the taxable value on a primary residence by $50,000. “We’re projecting a roughly $6 million…

Tampa City Council wants lawmakers to explain bill that would have gutted CRA’s

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A proposal by Lithia Republican Jake Raburn (HB 13) calling for an end to all community redevelopment agencies (CRA’s) died in a legislative committee in the Florida House last month. And members of the Tampa City Council are happy about that. Raburn’s bill didn’t go as far as a related proposal by Brandon Republican Tom Lee in the Senate (SB 1770). That bill would have placed much stricter requirements on CRA’s, but it also stalled in a committee as well. At Thursday’s Tampa…

Tampa Sports Authority’s intention to use a controversial pesticide on Babe Zaharias Golf Course next week has caused some heated rhetoric from neighborhood opponents. But the Tampa Police Department says an investigation so far shows no ‘credible threats’ have been posed from those critics against officials associated with the TSA. On Thursday, Tampa City Councilman Frank Reddick said that there had been threats made to him, as well as Tampa Sports Authority Eric Hart and County Commission and TSA board member…

Angry neighbors force Hillsborough County to test air quality after spraying controversial pesticide

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Officials with the Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission say they will test air quality at Babe Zaharias Golf Course in Tampa next week, a day after the Tampa Sports Authority applies the controversial fumigant Curfew. Curfew is a restricted pesticide that the TSA intends to use to control nematodes (ground worms) at Babe Zaharias. The State of Florida approved the use of Curfew back in 1999, with the proviso that there be a 100-foot setback from any occupied structure, said Jerry…
