Thousands crowd into Ybor City to remember the Orlando victims

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The dominant word at a vigil held in Ybor City on Monday night to honor the victims of the shooting massacre in Orlando was “love.” A crowd of at least two thousand people gathered for two hours in a parking lot on the north side of 7th Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets to hear locally elected officials tell the crowd that they were supporting them in this dark time, less than 48 hours after a gunman shot 49 people…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

On Thursday, the Tampa City Council (acting as the Community Redevelopment Agency), voted 4-1 to remove the controversial Tampa Bay Express toll lanes project from its five-year priority list of projects. It was a reflection of the persuasive arguments that critics of the Florida Department of Transportation-led project have making over the last year, and marks the second time that the council has voiced its opposition to the proposal. The move also follows the admission from Hillsborough County Commissioner Les Miller earlier this…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After weeks of negotiations, an agreement that would finally bring ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft into compliance with the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Agency once again failed to advance on Wednesday. The board voted 4-1 to suspend talks with the two companies until the 2nd DCA in Lakeland decides on whether the PTC had the right to issue citations to ride-sharing companies. His comments come a day after it was revealed that federal officials have agreed to conduct a preliminary civil rights investigation of the Tampa Bay Express, the controversial project from the Florida Department of Transportation that would expand what is known as the  Downtown Tampa Interchange…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.14.16 – So who wants to go to Cleveland this summer?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Why do Hillsborough County State Attorney employees even need “key cards”? That’s the question I have after reading the Anna Phillips/Windy March penned story in the Times this morning (and Elaine Silvestrini’s in the Trib). Their story revolves around an allegation made about Mark Ober’s work ethic by his Democratic party challenger, Andrew Warren. Records unearthed by his campaign revealed that Ober only used his key card five times in March, but the GOP incumbent says he “often comes to work and leaves…

Frank Reddick says throat-cutting gesture at council meeting “shocked” him

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tampa City Councilman Frank Reddick says all he wants is a fair investigation. Reddick filed an internal affairs complaint Tuesday against Vincent Gericitano, the president of the Tampa Police Benevolent Association. The complaint is in reference to the throat-slashing gesture that Reddick maintains Gericitano performed at last week’s Council meeting, after Reddick’s name was mentioned as the Council was voting on who their chairman would be for the upcoming year. The council went through 13 different ballots before ultimately choosing Councilman Mike…
