Former President George H.W. Bush fell at home on Wednesday and broke a bone in his neck but was doing OK, a spokesman said. Bush, 91, was in stable condition and was doing “fine” after Wednesday’s fall, spokesman Jim McGrath said. McGrath tweeted that the 41st president would be in a neck brace. Bush, the oldest living former U.S. president, was hospitalized in Houston in December for about a week for treatment of shortness of breath. He said he was…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The topsy turvy 2016 U.S. Senate election in Florida welcomes a new edition today in the persona of one Carlos-Lopez Cantera, the man plucked by Rick Scott from the Miami-Dade County property appraiser’s office a year and a half ago to help him win re-election next year. Yes, mission accomplished, but what has he done for us lately? For years, critics have argued that Florida’s lieutenant governor’s position is a waste of money, since there are no assigned duties to the…

in 2017/Top Headlines by

George W. Bush had Rangers and Pioneers in 1999-2000. Although he was criticized earlier on Friday for seeming to downplay the racial aspect of 21-year-old Dylann Roof’s murdering nine people in a historic black church in Charleston on Wednesday night, Jeb Bush had no problem acknowledging that fact while addressing approximately 500 people at the Hillsborough County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner in Tampa on Friday night. “It just breaks my heart that someone — a racist — would do what he did. It just breaks my heart, and I know it…

Is Jeb Bush’s economic growth goal realistic?

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush says there’s “not a reason in the world” why the U.S. economy can’t grow at 4 percent annually. Actually, there are a bunch of reasons it probably can’t. Many economists say the U.S. economy is ill equipped to grow consistently at even close to 4 percent. Current forecasts put growth averaging half that rate. Any president, Republican or Democrat, would have to overcome decades-long trends that are largely beyond the control of the Oval Office.…

Jeb Bush has optimistic message, faces challenges in ’16 bid

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Jeb Bush launched a Republican presidential bid months in the making Monday with a vow to get Washington “out of the business of causing problems” and to stay true to his beliefs – easier said than done in a bristling primary contest where his conservative credentials will be sharply challenged. “I will campaign as I would serve, going everywhere, speaking to everyone, keeping my word, facing the issues without flinching,” Bush said, opening his campaign at a rally near his…
