in Sports/Top Headlines by

Following a season-ending victory, Les Miles hung onto his coaching job. Mark Richt did not. The Georgia Bulldogs fired Richt, who had been their coach for 15 seasons, on Sunday. Richt had nine 10-win seasons, and if Richt stays on the job and wins a bowl game, this would be his 10th. Richt was 145-51 with two SEC titles. His team was 9-3 this year. The school released a statement saying it and Richt had “mutually agreed” to part ways.…

Football flashback: Florida makes time stand still against Georgia

in Sports by

They have won games when a wide receiver turned into a running back, the way Wes Chandler did in 1977. They have lost games when a coach turned into the village idiot, the way Doug Dickey did in the 1976 “Fourth and Dumb” play. They have lost games when an opposing wide receiver found a miracle, the way Georgia’s Lindsay Scott did in the 1980 “Run, Lindsay, run” game. They have won games when Steve Spurrier would not stop scoring,…

A look back at the always quotable Steve Spurrier

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Steve Spurrier made college football news conferences – which can range from tedious to sleep-inducing – into must-see events. The Head Ball Coach had plenty of targets for his zingers. Back in his Florida days, it was Tennessee, Georgia and Florida State. He tweaked NFL coaches for losing despite working around the clock. After he came to South Carolina, he also took aim at Clemson. Spurrier would sometimes put on a show. He faked his own arrest when star Jadeveon…

in Sports by

The Southeastern Conference has been fining its schools for rushing fields and storming courts since 2004. Now, a decade later, those penalties are going up. Way up. The league plans to “substantially” increase fines for teams that violate its on-field policy. SEC Commissioner Mike Slive indicated that the new starting point would be around $50,000 – 10 times more than the previous fine for first-time offenders. “You’re in the range,” Slive said Wednesday. “As far as I’m concerned, that’s real…

Bruce Ritchie: Enough secrecy! After voting on water plan, tri-state rivers group should vote to disband

in Top Headlines by

A group calling itself ACF Stakeholders was formed in 2010 with great promise in trying to create consensus among the various user groups along the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint (ACF) rivers. But when the group meets in Florida next week, it should vote to disband. Because the river system and the people who depend on it don’t need any more secrecy. And that’s what the group now seems to be largely about. ACF Stakeholders started off with great promise, in…

Bob Sparks: Entertainment industry adds to Florida’s economic menu

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

For years Florida governors and legislators stressed the need to diversify Florida’s economy. A state’s financial well-being so heavily dependent upon tourism and agriculture is a disaster or recession away from economic calamity, they said. They, and their successors who toe the same line, are right. Resorts, parks and Fresh From Florida are great for our economy in so many ways, but our menu needs more entrees. Television, film and entertainment production will not drive an economy, but it pedals…
