Bill Haas leads Valspar, but Jordan Spieth is in contention

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Bill Haas scrambled to his second 67 Saturday, a score that will enable him to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Valspar Championships. Not far back, however, is Jordan Spieth, who was presumably out of things. Well, maybe not so much. Spieth shot a 67 Saturday, and is now tied for ninth in the tournament. He might need some help to get into contention, but he’s closer than most would have thought. “I scrambled well,” Haas…

Steve Stricker doesn’t play as often as he once did, but he’s still good

in Sports by

Steve Stricker and Will MacKenzie share the lead at the Valspar Championship. Whether they can withstand the wind, we will see. Stricker, playing for only the fifth time this year, made an eagle on the 10th and a 60-foot birdie on the fourth to shoot a 5-under 66 to take a share of the lead. MacKenzie had a 67. in The Bay and the 'Burg by

St. Pete’s Twin Brooks Golf Course is reopening Friday after being closed since May and it’s way better than it was before. The new course is bigger, nicer and more community resourceful. After undergoing a $1.5 million facelift, Twin Brooks shifted from an 18-hole par-3 to a nine-hole par-3. Even though there are half the holes, the ones now dotting the massive property have fancier mounds better simulating play on a regulation course, a giant putting green, manmade lake and…

U.S. Open should be more fan friendly

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It’s a safe bet to say a large portion of the American population does not sit in front of a television for 6-8 hours on a weekend to watch golf. Count me among the occasional viewer. Watching and playing are two different things. Accessibility to golf courses is one of the benefits of living in Florida, especially the Tampa Bay area. There are exceptions to the television rule and this weekend is one of those exceptions. The U.S. Open, one…
