Go Hillsborough transportation plan begins second wave of meetings

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There are lots of cultural differences between Tampa and the larger outlying areas that encompass Hillsborough County. One of those fissures until recently was gay rights. Whereas the city itself had a robust LGBT community and representatives who treated that community with respect, the County Commission voted on policies that discriminated against gays, until they reversed some of those votes in the past two years. Another issue where the county and city residents diverge in their interests is on transportation. And…

PSTA board members and Greenlight Pinellas backers are still licking their wounds from a crippling, embarrassing defeat just four months ago. Who the H-E double hockey sticks would want to go down that road again before stopping to catch a breath and, I don’t know, avoid…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There were a lot of laughs when veteran local investigative TV reporter Mike Deeson took to the dais at the Tampa Tiger Bay Club meeting at Jackson Bistro on Harbor Island on Friday, but also a few bits of news. On former and probable future House District 64 Republican Jamie Grant, Deeson said that though no criminal charges were called for in a recent Hardee County grand jury report on Grant’s acceptance of millions of dollars of taxpayer funds for…

#2 on list of Tampa Bay’s Most Powerful Politicians — Bob Buckhorn

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Upon taking office, the mayor of Tampa automatically became the area’s most visible leader, which hasn’t been a problem for Bob Buckhorn to embrace. After losing a bid for County Commission in 2004, this longtime public servant/political animal’s time in the spotlight was on life support when he announced in 2010 that he would run to succeed Pam Iorio to lead City Hall. A decided underdog, he barely made it out of the primary election four years ago (topping Dick…

Hillsborough County now using elections officials to safeguard public comments on transit effort

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Score one for Sharon Calvert and the critics of Hillsborough County’s public information campaign that could lead to a transit tax referendum on the ballot a year from this November. In what is being described as an unprecedented move, the county is using members of the Supervisor of Elections (SOE) office to safeguard the written comments made by the public at one of the numerous public meetings being held over the next few months. What’s at stake is the possibility…
