Guns bills move forward in early committee action

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

In its first meeting in preparation of the 2016 regular legislative Session, a Senate committee pulled the trigger on two bills to alter Florida’s state gun statutes on Wednesday. On a so-called “campus carry” bill to allow concealed weapons into higher education facilities, a House panel shortly followed suit. First up was SB 130 sponsored by Sen. Garrett Richter, essentially this year’s version of Democrat Rep. Darryl Rouson‘s bill from last year to prevent residents of densely populated neighborhoods from…

Family matters: Excitement builds for western Panhandle Senate primary

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida’s western Panhandle has not been exactly known as a hotbed of electoral campaigns during recent election cycles. The region stretching from Pensacola to Panama City is steadfastly Republican in registration and in electoral dominance. GOP primaries decide most fights in the region, and incumbency has ensured few contentious primaries outside of local offices. NWF Daily News staff writer Tom McLaughlin says the Niceville Republican could be a candidate for the seat of Northwest Florida Congressman Jeff Miller, who hinted at a Senate run to replace presidential candidate Marco Rubio. With only about 530 days until the Senate election, Gaetz believes the time is short for a candidate without statewide name recognition to mount a campaign. “In order for me…

If Jeff Miller runs for Senate, North Florida dominoes will begin to fall

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

If Republican U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller runs in 2016 for Marco Rubio’s seat in the U.S. Senate, the political dominoes that are likely to fall will stretch from Florida’s border with Alabama to the Suwanee River. Odds of Miller running increased after he attended this past weekend’s quarterly meeting of the Republican Party of Florida, something that the Chumuckla lawmaker has not done for almost a year. Many saw Miller’s attendance at the event as yet another indication he will run for the U.S. Senate in 2016. Not…
