in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

April Thanos is taking her bid for Gulfport City Council serious. The political newcomer loaned herself $3,000 in her bid to unseat incumbent Ward 1 councilman Dan Liedtke. On top of that loan, Thanos brought in $2,746 in contributions from a combination of Pinellas County residents, Gulfport residents and out-of-towners. Her biggest contribution came from the Florida Voters Fund political committee. That committee is affiliated with the company managing Thanos’ campaign. The Gulfport Democratic Club kicked in $300 and the…

Barbara Banno calls Stonewall Democrat endorsement of Sam Henderson “tainted”

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There’s an odd thing that happened in Gulfport this election cycle. Stonewall Democrats, a pro-LGBT political group, endorsed a straight candidate for mayor when a gay candidate is running against him. Both are Democrats. The group gave its official nod to Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson for re-election, snubbing Barbara Banno of an endorsement she probably figured was in the bag. It doesn’t look very good for an openly gay Democrat to lose support from a pro-gay rights group to a…

The flier lists several of Banno’s priorities if elected. The first is Banno’s staple campaign promise: providing “better solutions and…
