Why Obamacare is good even when it sucks

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It’s no secret to anyone who has followed my work over the past several years that I’ve typically fallen on the defense side of the Affordable Care Act. I read it. All of it. And that’s no easy feat. My guess is, some of the staunchest Obamacare haters haven’t read all of it. I’ve defended the law because, in theory, it is a good law. Expanding health care to more people, that’s a good thing. Eliminating pre-existing condition provisions, great.…

Amid heated debate, FHA unveils new health care info site

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

It’s no secret Gov. Rick Scott, former health care CEO, has a newfound zeal for protecting Floridians from mayhem wrought by allegedly out-of-control hospitals and providers. Scott insists on more regulations, disclosure, and even criminal penalties for providers who charge “unconscionable” rates. He has even gone so as far to say a bill towards that end currently circulating doesn’t go far enough. In a conference call with reporters Tuesday morning, Florida Hospital Association President Bruce Rueben begged to differ. FHA unveiled a new…

Rob Bradley, Chris Sprowls publicly float health care transparency bill

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A pair of Republican lawmakers told reporters Monday they intend to ensure the days of unaccountable hospitals and insurers gouging Florida patients with staggering, unforeseen medical bills “are over.” Rep. Chris Sprowls Palm Harbor and Sen. Rob Bradley of Orange Park likened the consumer predictability they seek for consumers to that of patrons at a gas station or grocery store, with prices plainly stated right up front. “There’s really not too many places in our country anymore where someone can come in and play…

I predicted this sad socialist Rick Scott defeat months ago

in Peter/Top Headlines by

While absolutely owning it as the Beast on Halloween, I accurately predicted the fall of the last rose petal on the latest Rick Scott socialist scheme. That came today as Rep. Chris Sprowls, being a conservative, refused to spread the wealth with his health care transparency bill. Christine Jordan Sexton said Scott’s office gave this bill a “chilly reception.” Scott’s administration is “unhappy.” Good for Sprowls. Good for Richard Corcoran. To recap: Socialist swing and miss #1: Profit Sharing! Socialist…

The city of St. Pete has agreed to open its Employee Healthcare Clinic to part-time workers. The clinic has been open since 2013 for all full-time city employees. Based on a tentative agreement between the city and the employee union, that perk may soon be available to part-timers too. The $770,000 per year facility at Bayfront Medical Center offers basic medical care with no co-pay. Many basic medications are also free to employees. The facility is open during regular business…

House poised to vote down Senate’s Medicaid expansion bill

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

House Republicans appeared ready to reject the Senate’s plan on Medicaid, arguing Thursday that it is essentially an expansion that relies on money from the president’s health care overhaul. During a tense two-and-a-half hours of questions, House Republicans agreed the Senate plan was still a government entitlement program for “able-bodied adults” that would increase the federal deficit. House Speaker Steve Crisafulli said it was a “safe assumption” that the bill would be defeated on Friday. “It’s the same program rules,…

ICYMI: Legislators agree to do budget, health care during session

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida’s Republican-led Legislature will return to the state Capitol in June and try to do what they couldn’t do during their 60-day session that crashed to a halt. GOP legislative leaders announced late on Friday that they have come up with a long list of items they want to tackle during a 20-day special session, including a new state budget and even major healthcare changes. The most pressing item is the budget since state government could be shut down if…
