The company you keep: Sam Rashid turns up at Marco Rubio Tampa fundraiser

in Peter/Top Headlines by

An old proverb goes: “You are the company you keep.” Another saying, not quite as old, is “stop saying dumb things on social media.” That last one is a bit of wisdom Marco Rubio might have imparted on Republican activist Sam Rashid during Thursday’s $500-a-plate “Day One Marco” fundraiser in Tampa. Florida’s junior Senator has been very busy this summer, crisscrossing the state in his re-election effort. That means pressing a lot of flesh. So it should come as no surprise to see Rubio…

New law brings Hillsborough County in line with rest of Florida regarding restaurant size to sell alcohol

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For decades, aspiring restaurateurs in Tampa and Hillsborough County have had to contend with regulations unlike those in any other part of Florida. State law requires that any restaurant that serves alcohol must be at least 2,500 square feet in size. However, in Hillsborough County,  state law dictated that restaurants that sell booze must be at least 4,000 square feet. Not any longer, after Governor Rick Scott signed a bill (HB 1417) sponsored by Tampa House Republican Dana Young on Friday that revises Hillsborough’s space requirements for liquor licenses for restaurants. “What was…

Mitch Perry Report for 10.28.15 – Pressure grows on Rubio to leave U.S. Senate

in 2017/Top Headlines by

As he continues to pile up missed votes, Marco Rubio hasn’t been shy about the fact that he can’t stand the U.S. Senate. Fine, say his critics. Resign and let someone else do the job instead. This morning the South Florida Sun-Sentinel is calling for Rubio to step down in their lead editorial. If you hate your job, senator, follow the honorable lead of House Speaker John Boehner and resign it. Let us elect someone who wants to be there and earn an…

Tampa Chamber CEO to Rick Scott: “You owe us” after Sam Rashid fiasco

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Gov. Rick Scott got a figurative swift kick in the pants Monday when the head of Tampa’s leading business group told him to get a move on in filling a vacancy on the local aviation authority’s board. “Possibly unlike any appointment you will make, this next appointment is both an opportunity and your responsibility to make the right selection to advance the mission of Tampa International Airport,” wrote Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Bob Rohrlack. “Your previous decision…

Mitch Perry Report for 10.12.15 — Does Joe Maddon have the mojo this post-season?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Good morning….Well, it’s Columbus Day, one of those weird federal holidays which most people in the private sector don’t enjoy (similar to next months’ Veterans Day). In typical fashion, our Congress is not only taking the day off to make the holiday, but the entire week. This, despite the fact that the House GOP is supposed to be in crisis because they don’t have a leader in the pipeline ready to replace John Boehner. Any baseball fans out there? I have…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.2.15 — A call to (healthy) arms

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There’s no crying in baseball. Remember that maxim handed down to us via Tom Hanks’ character to Madonna’s in 1992’s A League of Their Own? But there is heartbreak. Last night at Tropicana Field, Cleveland Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco came within one strike of throwing the Indians’ first no-hitter since Len Barker’s perfect game way back in 1989. But on an 0-2 pitch, Tampa Bay Rays hitter Joey Butler lined a pitch over a diving second baseman’s glove, and the no-no was…
