5 things I think about this weekend’s St. Petersburg Times: A banner week for the newspaper

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

What a roller-coaster week it’s been for the folks at First Avenue South. After word spread — on this blog first — that the Times was dropping its lawsuit against the City of St. Petersburg, thereby ceding the fight over the city’s solicitation ban, many, including me, were ready to write that the axiom ‘You never pick a fight with those who buy ink by the barrel’ no longer applied to the opponents of the St. Petersburg Times. At least that was…

5 things I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times (6/15)

It’s not the St. Petersburg Times that is drawing my attention today, but its sister publication, the TBT, which ran this cover for today’s edition: Unless my eyes are mistaking me, that ain’t Carole Crist in the picture.  Actually, Carole Crist’s ass looks better than this woman’s, so Charlie put your eyes back in your sockets. Howard Troxler addresses just this kind of posturing by politicians.  Not the kind of posturing that has a pol staring at some chick’s t-back,…

I enjoyed a dirty martini at St. Pete Brasserie late last night and had the opportunity to speak with George Rahdert, the St. Petersburg Times lawyer on 1st Amendment issues.  Talking about the City of St. Petersburg ban on street-side solicitations, I told him, “Give ’em hell, George!” Well, reading today’s Declaration of War by Times Publishing Co. on the City of St. Petersburg, Hell may seem like a pleasant alternative to where this case will end up. As I’ve said before,…

I was ghastly ill over the weekend (why do I always get sick in May?), so today’s edition is a blend of commentary from Sunday and Monday’s editions of the St. Petersburg Times. As always, the best read on Monday comes via Tom Jones and his “Shooting from the lip” column.  A full page of insight into the world of sports that you didn’t already know from watching ESPN. Worst read is, as usual, Ernest Hooper’s banal column. Speaking of…
