Forecasters: Busy Atlantic hurricane season is more likely

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

U.S. forecasters say it’s more likely this could be the busiest Atlantic hurricane season since 2012. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s updated outlook predicts 12 to 17 named storms, including five to eight hurricanes, two to four of which could be “major.” On average, the U.S. gets 12 named Atlantic storms a season, including six hurricanes, three of them major. The El Nino effect in the Pacific that tends to reduce Atlantic hurricane activity is now dissipating. Gerry Bell…

One of the responsibilities of living in the paradise of Florida is annually preparing for hurricane season. Florida’s hurricane fund in best shape ever ahead of season

Florida’s continued lucky streak when it comes to dodging hurricane is helping a key state fund reach its best financial shape ever in the two decades it has been in place. It helped that the 2015 season — four hurricanes, a depression and seven tropical storms, including one that triggered a state of emergency across Florida — largely followed the preseason playbook that called for fewer storms thanks to a powerful El Niño weather pattern heating up the Pacific. Elsewhere was…

Football flashback: Louisville upsets Florida State in rain

Does the situation remind anyone of days gone by? FSU was undefeated back then, too. It was highly ranked. Its defense was shutting people down. And it lost to Louisville in overtime. Oops. It was Sept. 28, 2002, and the Seminoles waded into Louisville for a Thursday night game as the rain from Hurricane Isidore fell. FSU was ranked No. 4 in the nation. Louisville was off to a pedestrian start, losing to both Kentucky and Colorado State. Sports Illustrated…

Study: Are we shifting to fewer, weaker Atlantic hurricanes?

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

A new but controversial study asks if an end is coming to the busy Atlantic hurricane seasons of recent decades. The Atlantic looks like it is entering in to a new quieter cycle of storm activity, like in the 1970s and 1980s, two prominent hurricane researchers wrote Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience. Scientists at Colorado State University, including the professor who pioneered hurricane seasonal prognostication, say they are seeing a localized cooling and salinity level drop in the North…

Pier demolition debris gathered up in case Erika visits St. Petersburg

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There’s a tropical storm, maybe a hurricane, maybe heading straight for us. Maybe. Nevertheless, demolition of the inverted pyramid has been temporarily put on hold in order to make sure the site is safe should a storm maybe hit St. Petersburg. Crews were on site Friday afternoon clearing debris from the Pier head into large bins using cranes and other heavy machinery. The overall structure is still mostly intact. Portions of the exterior façade have been removed or partially removed.…
