By-law change adds controversy to Monday night’s Hillsborough DEC election

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Viewed from a certain angle, the Democratic Party resembles a smoking pile of rubble in the wake of last month’s general election. Not only will Donald Trump become president in less than two months, but the Senate and House (and soon the Supreme Court) are in Republican control. Instead of giving up, however, there appears to be a grassroots revival in certain quarters of the party, such as in Hillsborough County. At their first meeting after last month’s election debacle, several hundred…

In wake of loss to Donald Trump, Hillsborough County Democrats get surge of requests to join their party

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

At their first event since being devastated by the results of the presidential election, there was literally not enough room to contain the number of Democrats who showed up at the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee meeting in Ybor City Monday night. A second room adjoining the main boardroom at the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County facility was opened to contain the overflow crowd. “We’ve been inundated since the election,” said Ione Townsend, the chair of the Hillsborough County DEC. Although officially only 14…

Mitch Perry Report for 11.3.16 – Guns, pot and minimum wage measures to be voted on next week across the country

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In Florida, we have two constitutional amendments on the ballot that will be decided next Tuesday. The way it looks now, it would be a major upset if Amendment 2, the medical marijuana initiative, fails to get 60 percent of the electorate’s vote. Then again, conventional wisdom was that it would pass in 2014, and it came up a few points short. There’s also Amendment 1, the solar power amendment, where the momentum seems to be going against it at the…

With Hillsborough County Commissioners poised to decide next week on whether to put the Go Hillsborough half-cent sales tax for transportation on the November ballot, members of the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee gathered Monday night to weigh in on the issue. Except they didn’t. After hearing ten-minute presentations in both support and against the proposal, and with time running out on the 90-minute meeting, party officials opted to table the issue for another month. That could leave the group voiceless,…

Mitch Perry Report for 1.12.16 – SOTU time, baby!

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

OK, let’s not pretend that anyone out there is really all that interested, much less excited, that Barack Obama will deliver his final State of the Union address tonight. I would say that it’s an antiquated relic that the country has transcended, and in fact, last year’s SOTU was the least viewed since 2000. Having said that, nearly 32 million people still opted to tune into the annual ritual, broadcast up and down your cable package. That’s not bad in…

A third candidate in the race, Eastern Hillsborough County Democratic head Michael Newett, announced before the vote that he was dropping out of the contest. Townsend had been considered the favorite going into Monday night’s vote, in…

Three candidates vie to lead Hillsborough County Dems in 2016

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There are now three candidates vying to become the next chair of the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee, and none of them are Mark Hanisee. Ione Townsend (pictured), Mike Newett and Alvin Wolfe have all declared their intentions to lead the party when the Hillsborough DEC membership convenes to vote to succeed Elizabeth Belcher on January 11. Hanisee was immediately floated as a possible successor to Belcher when she announced she would be stepping down in November. The former chair of the Pinellas…
