Of course I think Jamie Bennett should quit

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

I’ve been asked about 200 times what I think Jamie Bennett should do next. My answer is unquivocal: he should announce that he will stop running for Mayor of St. Petersburg. Put aside his actions or involvement in “Ticketgate,” although that is pretty hard to do. Bennett was fully aware that the tickets were being distributed to advance his political campaign. Him saying he had no knowledge of this or that is an insult to the voters of St. Petersburg.…

Ticketgate: the political strategy behind the distribution of tickets

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

The first time I saw the tickets to the city’s suite at Tropicana Field was on or about April 16, immediately after Jamie Bennett called St. Pete Beach Mayor Mike Finnerty to confirm a) that Finnerty was still endorsing Bennett and b) if Finnerty wanted four tickets to the city’s suite at a Rays game. That was the precedent set by Jamie Bennett in my presence. Tickets equals politics. And from those actions I took my direction on how and…

Mr. Nice Guy is not that

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Mayoral hopeful Jamie Bennett intentionally tried to influence neighborhood presidents and community leaders with free baseball tickets to the city’s suite at Tropicana Field, said a campaign organizer fired Friday over the controversy. But campaign manager Peter Schorsch’s allegations don’t stop there. Schorsch said he and Bennett plotted and schemed to discredit other candidates and misled the public about their dirty campaign tactics, even going as far as to entice homeless people to crash rival Kathleen Ford’s news conference. “Mr.…

Mayoral forum at Parkshore

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

About fifty or so residents of the waterfront condominium community attended a forum for the six major mayoral candidates on Thursday at the Parkshore building. Unfortunately, I am already disgusted with these forums, and I have only been to two of them. Most of my disgust originates with Kathleen Ford, who reminds me of a pit bull choking against its own leash. She sooooo wants to break loose and tear into the closest piece of flesh. Groooowwwwllll, securities lending, bark,…

If Bill Heller runs for Senate, Frank Farkas runs for H-52

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Walking door-to-door for Jamie Bennett, I ran into my ol’ friend Frank Farkas. Talked him up about running again, and Frank said, if Bill Heller, as expected, runs for the state Senate and vacates his House seat, Farkas would run again to retake his old seat. Good for you, Frank, although you’re pretty much a liberal by today’s standards in Tallahassee.

Larry Williams launches campaign website

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

…and it’s not half-bad. Well, most political websites are half-bad, but Larry’s website at larrywilliamsformayor.com is better than, say, Kathleen Ford’s. Anyone else starting to get the feeling that ol’ Larry may be the proverbial dark horse in this race? At first, I thought he would just hurt Jamie Bennett, but the more I think about it, I think he damages Bill Foster and Deveron Gibbons. His supporters are out-of-the-way Republicans that would more likely support Bill or Dev before…

What an active PCDEC could have done

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

As I passed by the Saturday Morning Market and saw Scott Wagman’s hard-working volunteers continue to collect the requisite number of signatures from Saint Petersburg voters, a task which Jamie Bennett’s campaign only recently completed, I couldn’t help but wonder what a difference it would make if there was a more active, more politically astute Pinellas County Democratic Executive Committee. Let’s say I was chair of the PCDEC, a terrifying thought to some, I am sure. But if I were…
