The complaint was made by Louis Minardi, president of Yellow Cab Company of Tampa. He said that Crist had revealed a conflict of interest in his role as the chair of the PTC involving the current negotiations with the cab companies and transportation network companies Uber and Lyft. The claim specifically involved Crist’s wife, Angela, who works at…

Claim bills filed for 2017 Legislative Session

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A brain-damaged Pasco County woman and a deceased Florida State football player are again the subjects of claim bills filed in the Florida Legislature. According to the Florida Senate website, 22 of the bills — also known as relief acts — were turned in on Monday. Under the legal doctrine of sovereign immunity, Florida law limits local governments and other public bodies to paying no more than $200,000 per person in damages unless lawmakers approve extra money. But in recent years, as…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Even before they began operating in Tampa, a coterie of Tampa Bay area Republicans have championed ridesharing companies Uber and Lyft. In a fundraising pitch sent to supporters in her bid for the state Senate District 18 seat this fall, Young boasts about the work that Republicans have done in Tallahassee in recent years, saying that the state leads the country in job growth and that unemployment is at an eight-year low. “But there’s…

Jamie Grant doesn’t miss 2014-15 election drama

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

This year, Jamie Grant got lucky. The Hillsborough County Republican qualified for office with no opposition, meaning he’s an automatic walk-on for the 2016-18 term. But for Grant, who represents Florida House District 64, that’s far from the story two years ago. He was re-elected, then had the results thrown out after legal challenges put them into question, before finally regaining his seat. “While it’s hard to imagine a more frustrating campaign than last cycle, I’m a big believer in focusing on what…

An Auburn license plate in Florida is a bad idea

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

A pair of eminent Florida politicos want to introduce legislation to create a specialty Florida license plate bearing the logo of Auburn University. That’s a bad idea for several reasons. No animus against Democratic strategist Kevin Cate, one of the kindest political people around, or Rep. Jamie Grant, who gives me courage despite my own receding hairline. But this is an idea whose time should never come. Florida, for one thing, has enough trouble supporting its own institutions. Historians and scholars studying Florida often…
