in 2017/Top Headlines by

After enduring his worst week as a candidate since declaring that he was running for the senate over a year ago, Jupiter Representative Patrick Murphy has received a nice boost in his campaign to succeed Marco Rubio in Washington, procuring the endorsement from the Florida Police Benevolent Association. “The Florida PBA is proud to endorse Patrick Murphy because we know the he will stand with our police officers and first responders in the U.S. Senate,” said PBA President John Rivera. “Patrick is the…

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Last night in Santa Monica, Bernie Sanders called Hillary Clinton‘s decision not to debate him in California “insulting” to the voters in the Golden State. “A number of months ago our campaign and her campaign reached an agreement on a number of debates, including one here in California,” Sanders told the crowd, according to a release issued by the Sanders campaign overnight. He added that it was “insulting to the people of California — our largest state — that she is not prepared…

Jeff Atwater has no regrets about not entering run for U.S. Senate

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It was thirteen months ago when Jeff Atwater stunned the Florida political world by announcing he would not run for the U.S. Senate in 2016. A Quinnipiac Poll taken just a week earlier showed him leading the two major Democratic candidates in the race, Congressmen Alan Grayson and Patrick Murphy, and he was considered to have by far the best name recognition of any Florida Republican considering entering the contest. His decision unfroze the field, with David Jolly, Ron DeSantis, Carlos Lopez-Cantera and Todd Wilcox all filing to declare their candidacies in the months that followed…

Today on Context Florida: Peter Schorsch talks about the testy process of choosing a new state Insurance Commissioner. Among the four top statewide officials, no one walked away a winner from last week’s battle. Neither Gov. Rick Scott nor CFO Jeff Atwater got the candidate he wanted, with both settling on the third name Atwater threw out at Friday’s emergency Cabinet meeting, David Altmaier. Interestingly enough, the process was a design that Atwater himself, a former lawmaker and Senate president, once…

Insurance-related concerns reacted with cautious optimism to Friday’s naming of David Altmaier as Florida’s new Insurance Commissioner. “The Personal Insurance Federation of Florida is committed to working with the new commissioner to increase the health and stability of the property and casualty insurance market in Florida,’’ Executive Director Michael Carlson said in a statement. The group represents Allstate, Castle Key, Progressive and State Farm insurance companies in Florida. It says its members write “nearly half of all auto policies in Florida…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A 34-year-old former high school math teacher was named Friday to be the next Florida Insurance Commissioner. David Altmaier, 34, currently a deputy commissioner at the Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR), starts on Monday. Altmaier, who will be paid $165,000 a year, began at OIR as an insurance examiner in 2008. The selection caps off weeks of indecision. Gov. Rick Scott and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater have deadlocked at two previous Cabinet meetings. State law dictates they first have to agree on…

Top state officials still can’t agree on new Insurance Commissioner

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A second Florida Cabinet meeting has ended with no agreement on a new state Insurance Commissioner. Gov. Rick Scott and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater again deadlocked on Tuesday, further stalling the process. In a near replay of the last meeting, an intransigent Scott again moved to hire retired insurance executive Jeffrey Bragg. An equally intransigent Atwater declined to second the nomination after an almost palpably long silence. Under state law, Scott and Atwater first have to agree on one candidate. The Office Of Insurance Regulation is under the Department…
