Industrial hemp bill re-filed for next session

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

State Sen. Jeff Clemens has again filed a bill allowing the cultivation of industrial hemp, the fiber of the cannabis plant that’s used to make fabrics, paper and rope. The bill (SB 554) was submitted Monday. Because hemp is related to marijuana, it’s banned in the states. But the level of THC – the chemical that causes a high – is virtually zero in hemp. Last year, the bill died in the Appropriations Committee. “I understand there are negative connotations, but people have to understand this…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Department of Economic Opportunity head Jesse Panuccio faced a battery of pointed questions and criticism over an executive branch battle with a labor union and the state’s beleaguered unemployment system in a Wednesday meeting of a Senate budget panel. in Statewide/Top Headlines by

In its first meeting in preparation of the 2016 regular legislative Session, a Senate committee pulled the trigger on two bills to alter Florida’s state gun statutes on Wednesday. Garrett Richter, essentially this year’s version of Democrat Rep. Darryl Rouson‘s bill from last year to prevent residents of densely populated neighborhoods from…

The bill faced some opposition from gun rights groups last year but National…

Campaigns for Florida Senate’s eight term-limited seats shift into gear

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

As of June, none of the 12 Florida senators running for re-election is facing much of a challenge — Democratic state Sen. Jeff Clemens is the only incumbent to draw an opponent so far, but it won’t derail him from another term. District 29 looks set as well, with Democratic state Rep. Jim Waldman having a clear path to take over for outgoing state Sen. Jeremy Ring. The other open seats – Districts 1, 5, 13, 19, 23 and 31…

Jeff Clemens draws primary challenger in Palm Beach Senate seat

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Now that Lake Worth state Sen. Jeff Clemens is reportedly the favorite to become the leader of Florida’s Senate Democrats and has received national press attention for provoking officials in the Gov. Rick Scott administration, it’s easy to forget Clemens’ path to the Senate in the first place: a 17-vote nail-biter of a Democratic primary back in 2012, against then-fellow incumbent House state Rep. Mack Bernard. Clemens isn’t likely in for a repeat of that kind of close internecine battle again in 2016, but he has drawn a challenger with a D…
