Jeff Eakins: School grades just one part of whole education picture

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

What do school grades really mean this year? It’s a question I’ve been asked wheneverĀ I meet parents, employees, and attend community events. The way the state is calculating school grades for the 2014-2015 school year only, isĀ very different than it has been in years past, or will be in future years. The state hasĀ always touted its accountability system as a system with integrity that has kept aĀ balance between student proficiency and student growth. However, that is not the caseĀ for the…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.24.15 – Immigration follies

in 2017/Top Headlines by

One of the factors in Donald Trump’s surprise success in the polls (other than it’s August of 2015 and doesn’t mean whole lot) is that the mainstream (i.e. television) media has pretty much handled him with kid gloves. And why not, since he’s ratings (and clickbait) gold? MaybeĀ – just maybe, that tide is beginning to turn. On ABC’sĀ This WeekĀ on Sunday, host George Stephanopolous grilled the formerĀ ApprenticeĀ star on hisĀ preposterous immigration plan to deport the more than 11 million undocumented in this…

Council members mostly OK with Bob Buckhorn decision to hire within TPD for new chief

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Of all the relationships that a big-city mayor has, the one with their police chief is considered paramount. Last summer in St. Petersburg, Rick Kriseman alienated some City Council members who felt they deserved more of an opportunity to weigh in on a replacement for outgoing chief Chuck Harmon. The mayor then surprised everyone by chucking his four finalists and picking Clearwater Police Chief Tony Holloway to lead the SPPD. Now it’s Bob Buckhorn’s turn. Although the recently re-elected mayor…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Yesterday was quite a day news wise. But before we talk City Council races, how about that Hillsborough County School District Board? They did it again yesterday —Ā goingĀ against the sentiments Ā of the editorial writers and newspaper columnists who demanded they take on a national search to succeed MaryEllen Elia as the district’s superintendent. Instead, on a 4-3 vote, the board opted to hire interim superintendent Jeff Eakins, if he can come to terms on a contract by June 9. Two…
