In debate, Jim Davison doesn’t dismiss idea of New Tampa secession from Tampa

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

An interesting word popped up at a debate between Tampa City Council candidates for next week’s runoff election — “secession.” Ever since New Tampa was annexed in the late 1980s, some residents have been frustrated that they aren’t receiving the same city services as other Tampa neighborhoods, particularly downtown. During Tuesday night’s debate at the New Tampa Regional Library, District 7 candidate Jim Davison did not rule out the possibility of secession from the city of Tampa. “As far as splitting off and…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The first regularly scheduled flight in more than 50 years flew from Miami to Havana yesterday morning, just in time to begin the formal mourning for Fidel Castro, which leads to the question du jour — What will Donald Trump do with the Cuba-U.S. relations? The President-elect tweeted that “If Cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the Cuban people, the Cuban/American people and the U.S. as a whole, I will terminate deal.” To date, Cuba hasn’t appeared to reciprocate very much in terms of the U.S.’s…

In the case of Corcoran, his proposals for lobbying reform have been well publicized in the past week. He also said repeated his pledge yesterday not to accept any spending projects that are not filed as House bills on the…

Mitch Perry Report for 11.22.16 — The sad story of Chris Christie

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There’s no doubt Rudy Giuliani will get some meaty position in the upcoming Donald Trump administration, because the dude was loyal as hell to the president-elect throughout the past year. Chris Christie, on the other hand, may be looking at bupkes. The New Jersey governor was one of the first mainstream Republicans to endorse Trump, which he did after he flamed out in the New Hampshire primary. Since that time, reporters have had a field day blasting the one-time fierce (bullying?)…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times is recommending Luis Viera for the Tampa City Council District 7 seat, prompting his opponent, Jim Davison, to label it as an endorsement of “the status quo” on taxes and investment in the City of Tampa. Davison and Viera are locked in a battle to win the run-off in the special election to succeed Lisa Montelione on Dec. 6. In their editorial published Monday, the paper writes that while both candidates are serious and on top of…
