Mitch Perry Report for 10.18.16 — Amy Schumer not the 1st liberal comic to alienate her fans in Tampa

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Amy Schumer isn’t the only major comic whose liberal schtick ended up alienating some Tampa residents who coughed up big money for a night’s entertainment. In 2003 Bill Maher gave an eviscerating takedown of George W. Bush at the Straz Theatre (still known then simply as the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center). It was just months after the “successful” invasion of Iraq. It was well before things went truly south for the U.S. and western forces there, and in our popular…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Bob Buckhorn’s recent trip to China invoked charges of hypocrisy from critics, who compared his very different public stance when it comes to doing business with Cuba, another country known to violate human rights. Now two city council candidates who hope to join the current board next month are expressing similar sentiments. First some background: When it was announced the mayor would travel to Lanzhou, China last month to establish a sister-city connection initiated by USF Health, there were definitely a few people in Tampa who expressed irritation regarding the apparent…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

On the campaign trail last year, an ebullient Jeb Bush used to talk about how we were on the verge of the greatest time to be alive ever, with a limitless future ahead. “We’re on the verge of where my little boy Jack, my four day-old Jack is going to live until he’s 130 years old,” Bush told hundreds of Republican activists at a New Hampshire Republican Party summit in April of 2015. Later, he moved it up to 150 years. Jeb…

The six-member board (Yolin Capin was absent) voted 4-2 in favor of the…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

(Updated) Attorney Luis Veira got a boost to his campaign for the Tampa City Council District 7 race on Monday when he received the backing of the Tampa Firefighters AFF Local 754. But that endorsement is being attacked by some of his opponents, who claim it’s rigged because they never had the opportunity to make their case before the union. However, the head of the union says they shouldn’t have any beef. “I’m very disappointed,” said retired Tampa police officer Orlando Gudes,…
