There will not be a vote on a new Rays deal this week. St. Pete City Council Chairwoman Amy Foster confirmed Wednesday that there was no chance a deal – brokered between Mayor Rick Kriseman and the Tampa Bay Rays to allow the team to look for stadium sites outside of St. Pete – would be voted on at Thursday’s meeting. Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times reported that Kriseman’s intent was to put a vote before council on Thursday. However,…

The St. Pete Grand Prix got the green flag to race in downtown until 2020. The original deal would have expired in 2017. Chris Ballestra, the city’s managing director of development coordination, told City Council the administration had negotiated with the company Green Savoree to secure an updated contract that allows the Indy Car race to continue in St. Pete while still protecting residents and the city’s interests. Will Iowa voters be getting trashed again by Donald Trump today? (Or by one of his interns?) We saw the unprecedented action of a Trump apology yesterday, after he re-tweeted a tweet from one of his interns who wrote, “#BenCarson is now leading in the #polls in #Iowa… Too much #Monsanto in the #corn creates issues in the brain? @realDonaldTrump #GOP“ That came after the first poll since mid-July where Trump wasn’t leading — in this case, a Quinnipiac survey that has Ben Carson up relatively big — 8 points — over…

Two deals were on the table during a special meeting Thursday — one from chair Charlie Gerdes, the other from Jim Kennedy. The Kennedy plan was approved by a 5-3 vote. Gerdes, Darden Rice and Amy Foster voted against it. Under Kennedy’s plan, the Rays would have to pay St. Pete $4 million a…

Tampa Bay Times column shows new potential for new tone on Rays – it’s time for team to compromise

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tampa Bay Times columnist John Romano threw out a fresh take on the long-neglected conversation involving the Tampa Bay Rays and the team’s tenure at Tropicana Field. This new(ish) tone encourages the Rays to accept one of two deals being considered by City Council. That’s a giant step back from the editorial board’s oft-uttered postulations that the four City Council holdouts on a previous deal were obstructionists sure to bring strife and doom to a city on the rise. The…
