Former Port Richey City Attorney James Mathieu has resigned as chair of the Republican Party of Pasco. In a brief email to supporters, Mathieu said the move was for personal reasons. “Thank all of you for this opportunity to serve,” he wrote. “Keep the faith and Republicans will prevail in 2016.  Thank you all.” Mathieu, president of Mathieu Mediations and the Athenian Academy, a charter school in New Port Richey, has been chair of the Pasco GOP since July 2013…

Florida legislators push bills tied to their private jobs

in Top Headlines by

During the recently-concluded legislative session, Senate President Andy Gardiner constantly warned about the threat to the state’s hospitals if they were to lose more than $1 billion that now comes from the federal government. There’s a good reason Gardiner understands hospitals: he works for one. Gardiner’s employment is legal, but it highlights a common practice in the Florida Legislature. The amendment was withdrawn because of a likely rule challenge because the language is contained in another bill SB 170, Legg said. The bill was never heard in a committee.…

State Sen. John Legg says he considers former state Rep. Jimmy Patronis to be a friend and a fine man, but he doesn’t think he should have gone so quickly from the Legislature to the Public Service Commission. And Legg has filed a bill amendment he said is aimed at preventing that from happening in the future. Patronis, a Republican from Panama City, served in the House from 2006 to 2014, when he reached his term limits before being appointed by…

Today on Context Florida: Dog whistles, GOP diversity, sea level rise and scholarships

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: Voters respond to politicians’ racist “dog whistles,” says Martin Dyckman. No president of our era has evoked such venomous disrespect and hatred as Barack Obama. The Tea Party would not exist but for him, but I doubt there is one member in a hundred to realize let alone admit that race is the reason. Republican politicians who persist in trying to mock and minimize the Obama presidency are riding a whirlwind, whether they know or pretend not…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.16.15 — The $2 billion elephant in the Capitol

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For those of you out there less enamored by Florida’s reputation as the “Gunshine State,” there was some positive news out of Tallahassee Wednesday night. That proposal that would give school superintendents the ability to designate a school district employee or volunteer to carry a concealed weapon on a school campus was scheduled on the docket Wednesday in the Senate Education Committee. Committee Chairman John Legg, though, exercised his authority and said it wouldn’t come up again in his committee.…
