No audit of hospital taxing district … for now

in Top Headlines by

The discussion of whether to have the state auditor general audit a hospital taxing district was delayed on Monday. Joint Legislative Auditing Committee Chairman state Sen. Joseph Abruzzo said the committee was waiting for more information from the North Lake County Hospital District to be released and that state Rep. Larry Metz, who requested the audit, was willing to temporarily delay the discussion. Metz on Feb. 19 requested the audit. Metz told Florida Politics on Monday that he requested the…

Jack Seiler, six other Broward mayors, endorse Kendrick Meek in Senate race

in Statewide by

From the Sun-Sentinel: Kendrick Meek’s U.S. Senate campaign plans to roll out more endorsements on Thursday, including Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler. Seiler is a close political friend of Gov. Charlie Crist, the former Republican now running for the Senate with no party affiliation. The Democratic Party was a stronger tug for Seiler, who is supporting Meek in his primary fight with Palm Beach billionaire Jeff Greene. Besides Seiler, the Meek campaign plans to announce endorsements of six other Broward…

Darryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg. “But some we can chip away at incrementally.” The bill (which I track with LobbyTools), cosponsored by Rep. Joseph Abruzzo, D-Wellington, would forbid Florida retailers from selling a list of pipes — including any made of metal, wood, acrylic, glass, stone, plastic or ceramic — unless 75 percent of their sales are tobacco. State Rep. Erik Fresen,…

Rep. Joseph Abruzzo’s bill to allow intra-state poker is a bad bet for Florida

in Peter/Statewide by

Raise or fold. Any advanced poker player will tell you that those are the only two real options when faced with a big bet. Either your hand is strong enough to win the pot or you don’t belong in the pot. Just calling, or “limping in,” is a sure-fire way to lose money. Whether or not to raise or fold is the situation the state of Florida finds itself in as it attempts to deal with online poker. Currently, online…
