Proposal to limit outside money in St. Pete elections moves to committee

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A split St. Petersburg City Council voted Thursday to send a proposal that would limit political action committees’ involvement in municipal election to a committee for discussion. If the idea passes the committee, it would come back to the Council. The proposal, which is the brainchild of Councilmember Darden Rice, is aimed at “super PACs,” political action committees that are allowed to raise an unlimited amount of money from corporations, unions, individuals and associations to influence the outcome of elections. Rice…

Pet stores must sell dogs, cats from humane organizations under St. Petersburg proposal

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Council members unanimously gave tentative approval to an ordinance that would ban the sale of dogs and cats in St. Petersburg pet shops unless they came from humane organizations or rescue groups. The item is scheduled for a final public hearing at the July 21 meeting. “It better protects pets and it discourages the puppy mill business, which, I think, is self-evident cruelty,” council member Karl Nurse said. Nurse had spearheaded the issue. The ordinance is similar to others that…

But council members agreed repairs won’t come quickly enough to prevent another overflow. “We will be dealing with serious spill events over the summer, and we need to be straightforward about that,” council member Darden Rice said. The sooner something…

Dan Fiorini, a first-time candidate challenging fellow Democrat Wengay Newton for the open House District 70 seat, raised more cash than Newton in April, the third month in a row he’s done so. The April report shows Fiorini raised $4,496.95 to Newton’s $3,060.00, including in-kind contributions. “Obviously, our message is resonating with the community, “Fiorini said in a statement on Wednesday. “Mr. Newton has been a candidate for 17 months.  In just four months, my campaign has closed the fundraising gap, and…

St. Petersburg based attorney Ben Diamond will run as a Democrat for the now open House District 68 seat later this year. In what appears to be a coordinated effort, Diamond made his announcement just hours after incumbent Dwight Dudley announced publicly that he would not run for the seat he has held since 2012. “I have long been committed to serving my community, and I am excited about the opportunity to represent the citizens of Pinellas County in Tallahassee,” Diamond said in a…
