Sean Shaw, Darryl Rouson file bill to end Florida’s ban on ex-felon voting rights

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Under current Florida law, those who are convicted of any felony lose the right to vote, the right to sit on a jury, the right to hold public office, and the right to possess a firearm, unless they are granted the restoration of their civil rights by the state Office of Executive Clemency. Legislation sponsored by Tampa Bay-area Democrats Darryl Rouson and Sean Shaw would end the automatic suspension of civil rights for those convicted of a nonviolent felony. “Even if the sentence has…

Florida doesn’t need an elected Secretary of State, or Agriculture Commissioner

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

It would tax the imagination to come up with anything that Florida needs less than to elect a secretary of state once again. Why would the Legislature even consider that? Sen. Aaron Bean, the sponsor, explained it the other day. As reported by FloridaPolitics.com, the Fernandina Beach Republican told the Senate ethics committee that in the main he wants a fifth position on the Cabinet to avoid tie votes that require the governor to be on the prevailing side or…

Beyonce, Tim Tebow for prez? Invalid votes spiked in Florida

in 2017 by

Beyonce, Tim Tebow or the Norse god Thor for prez? Those were some of Florida’s more unusual picks for president this past election. And the number of Florida voters who didn’t cast a vote for either Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton or any other valid contender spiked in 2016, apparently in protest over the ballot choices. A report released by state officials Wednesday showed more than 161,000 Florida voters who took part in the elections either at the polls or by…

Case dismissed: Dan Raulerson to remain in House

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by
Dan Raulerson

A Tallahassee judge has tossed out a lawsuit over the use of “Wite Out” on state Rep. Dan Raulerson‘s re-election filing paperwork. In an order issued Wednesday, Circuit Judge Charles W. Dodson dropped the case brought by Jose N. Vazquez Figueroa, the Democrat who unsuccessfully challenged Raulerson last year for the House District 58 seat. Dodson ruled he did not have jurisdiction to decide the matter and threw out the suit “with prejudice,” meaning Vazquez can’t refile it. Raulerson’s lawyer, Emmett Mitchell, had argued in a Tuesday court hearing that the judge couldn’t…

Dan Raulerson qualifying challenge now in judge’s hands

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by
Raulerson, Dan

A Tallahassee judge now will decide whether a lawsuit challenging state Rep. Dan Raulerson‘s re-election over the use of “Wite Out” will go forward. “I’m going to review this and get an order out,” Circuit Judge Charles W. Dodson said Tuesday, after a half-hour hearing. “Good luck.” Raulerson’s attorney had moved to toss out the case, saying it was moot with the Plant City Republican having won in November and been sworn in to represent House District 58.  Only the House of Representatives, which is constitutionally the sole…

Donald Trump wins all votes of Florida’s Electoral College

in 2017/Top Headlines by

As expected, Florida’s 29 Republican members of the Electoral College on Monday cast their vote for Donald Trump for president and Mike Pence for vice president. The electors are among Florida’s most loyal Republicans. They were chosen by the state GOP and approved by Gov. Rick Scott. The votes were cast as dozens of protesters hollered and chanted against Trump in the Capitol rotunda. Secretary of State Ken Detzner, who was appointed by Scott, presided over the highly-scripted and generally…

Plaintiff misses hearing in ‘Wite-Out’ case against Dan Raulerson

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by
Raulerson

It’s always a bad sign when a plaintiff doesn’t show up for a hearing in his own lawsuit. Jose N. Vazquez Figueroa was supposed to be in the Leon County Courthouse Wednesday morning to explain why he should win his suit against state Rep. Dan Raulerson. Vazquez, who is representing himself, is seeking to disqualify Raulerson, a Plant City Republican, from his re-election this year to his House District 58 seat. Vazquez was his unsuccessful Democratic opponent. His suit says…
