Mitch Perry Report for 11.5.15 – A Hillsborough transportation plan without a sales tax?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

I received a text message last night informing me that the Tampa Bay Sierra Club had embraced Hillsborough County Commission Chair Sandy Murman‘s late-hour plan to fund transportation projects – which sounds like a larger sized version of what the Club called for back this past summer. You remember, the Club called for the county to began raising mobility fees and the gas tax, saying it would be a good start to raising funds for the county’s myriad transportation needs. I’ve…

Ken Welch latest Democrat to embrace Charlie Crist’s congressional candidacy

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Considering he was at Charlie Crist‘s pitch two weeks ago to run for Congress, it was no surprise Wednesday when the Crist campaign said it now has Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch‘s backing. “Charlie Crist has been standing up for our values his whole life, even when it wasn’t easy,” Welch says in a prepared statement from the former governor’s campaign. “I’ve known Charlie for years – he’s a man of the people, and I know he will move us…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Earlier this month, a 9-year-old boy drowned in the waters off of St. Pete Beach. Now, Pinellas County is re-evaluating the warning signage — or lack thereof — on its beaches. “I want to take a look at the signage and see if there’s anything else we can do on our beach front,” said longtime Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch, speaking during Commission’s Oct. 20 meeting. “Because, a parent might think that if you’re in ankle-deep water, you’re OK. Obviously,…

Would-be CD 13 Dem candidates totally fine with Charlie Crist’s candidacy

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Although St. Petersburg attorney Jessica Ehrlich was soundly defeated by Bill Young in his last re-election for Congress in 2012, her margin of defeat was the second closest of any losing Democrat in 40 years, and she was running hard in the fall of 2013 to face Young again in 2014. However, after Young’s death in the fall of 2013, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee ignored Ehrlich’s efforts and recruited former CFO Alex Sink to run as the Democratic nominee. Sink…

County Commissioner Janet Long approaching $34K for re-election campaign

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Incumbent Janet Long has continued her bid for Pinellas County Commission re-election with her best month of campaign fundraising thus far. The 70-year-old Democrat and former state representative from Seminole raised exactly $11,800 in September, over $1,000 more than her previous monthly best. That figure brings Long’s campaign contribution total up to approximately $33,458. She formally jumped into the race for Commission’s District 1 seat back in May. In total, 45 checks were contributed to the Long campaign in September. That…

Pinellas County paying more attention to its pets

“It’s been a really great year for animals in Pinellas County.” Those were the words of the Humane Society of Pinellas’ executive director, Sarah Brown, during her October 6 address to county commissioners — their first regular meeting of the month. Brown was speaking  in support of the commission’s proposed new amendments to the County Code’s Animal Services chapter. If approved, the amendments will establish a classification and penalties for “irresponsible pet owners,” and permit Pinellas’ Animal Services to issue…

Darryl Rouson challenged by School Board Chair Linda Lerner on South St. Pete school crisis

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Reaction was fierce and accusatory in the immediate wake of the revelations of a Tampa Bay Times story published last month that traced the Pinellas County School Board’s role in resegregating five elementary schools and having them turn into some of the worst performing ones in Florida. St. Petersburg-based House Democrat Darryl Rouson called on the Florida attorney general’s office of civil rights to investigate whether the Pinellas County School Board’s decision in 2007 had resulted in discrimination against black students. At a Suncoast…
