I’m sure I am in the minority, but I’m just not a fan of the otherwise affable Ernest Hooper (I wince every time I read his closing sentence — “That’s all I am saying”).  His contention that “nothing good happens after 2 a.m.” as a criticism of the City of St. Petersburg’s recent decision to change “last call” to 3 a.m. is just silly.  Most of the great American cities have a “later last call” and a vibrant night life…

Reason #3 why St. Pete should have a later ‘last call’

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Great Britain recently liberalized alcohol laws by allowing 24 hour drinking.  The result?  In the three months after the law went into effect, alcohol-related crime and violence have dropped significantly over the same period,  Serious violent crime has fallen over one-fifth and injuries have fallen 14%. Licensing minister James Purnell said: “The predictions that licensing reform would lead to an immediate upsurge in crime haven’t borne out.”
