David Jolly makes surprise visit to Seminole City Council

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Mayor Leslie Waters said she and the rest of the Seminole City Council were caught by surprise when U. S. Rep. David Jolly dropped in during Tuesday’s meeting. Jolly, a Republican, was there to honor Waters and council member Thom Barnhorn, who received Home Rule Hero awards from the Florida League of Cities. Waters said the recognition was memorialized into the U.S. Congressional Record. The League recently recognized nearly 70 city officials with 2016 Home Rule Hero Awards. Those local…

In Seminole, recreation is about more than sports or exercise

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Seminole has opened its “Digital Den,” a state-of-the-art digital arts studio that’s the first of its kind in a municipal recreation setting. The studio, which opened Monday, is designed to appeal to kids who might be more interested in art and technology than in sports or exercise. The studio is the brainchild of Mark Ely, the city’s community development director. Not only did Ely come up with the concept, but he also funded the studio out-of-pocket. Thus far, he’s put…

Mayors ask Pinellas to reconsider Sunday morning alcohol sales ban

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Some Pinellas mayors want the Pinellas County Commission to relax its ban on selling alcohol before 11 a.m. on Sundays. Allowing sales earlier in the day, they say, is a matter of smart economics, a sign of a progressive region, and a tourist-friendly idea. “In our minds, it’s just sort of a leftover law that doesn’t have any use anymore,” said R.B. Johnson, mayor of Indian Rocks Beach, of his council’s favorable stance on changing the rule. “We just felt…

Leslie Waters and some chick dressed like the drug mule from the end of the movie Goodfellas.

A point-by-point rebuttal of Diane Stenle’s editorial criticizing early mail-in voting

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Let’s start being honest about why the St. Petersburg Times seeks to downplay the significance of early, mail-in voting: if voters cast their ballots early, that will lessen the importance of the Times‘ coverage, especially its editorial recommendations. My point-by-point response to Diane Stenle’s editorial is in italics. Candidates might as well throw out the play book on how to run campaigns for local offices in Pinellas County. It’s a whole new ball game. The game changer: mail balloting. Stenle…

Where are the candidates for City Council?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Around St. Petersburg’s City Hall, you can’t step over a homeless person without bumping into someone running for Mayor. With Larry Williams throwing his hat in the ring last week, there are currently nine people hoping to replace Rick Baker. Being a candidate for mayor is the only job sector in town that’s a growth industry. Where then are all the candidates for St. Petersburg City Council? There are five seats up for grabs this year, and currently there are…

Leslie Waters raising money by the bucketload

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Leslie Waters, a former Republican member of the state House of Representatives who termed out of office, has been a fundraising machine. As of the last reporting deadline, she has raised $8,150, more than double the $3,495 that incumbent Tom Barnhorn has raised. Waters has also drawn heavily on her Republican pals in her run for this nonpartisan seat: the Belleair Women’s Republican Club ($500), the Suncoast Republican Women’s Club ($100), and the St. Petersburg Republican Club ($100). Waters also…
