Mitch Perry Report for 2.4.16 – The field narrows

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Nashua, N.H. — Good morning from the Extended Stay America motel in Nashua, where it was an absolutely balmy 53 degrees at 5:30 a.m. It’s not, however, expected to get any warmer. No rain in the forecast (I don’t think) after a day that, well, if this were Florida, you’d have been hearing of severe flooding by lunchtime. By I digress. Rand Paul and Rick Santorum quit the race yesterday — er, “suspended” — their campaigns. Whatever. I’m genuinely disappointed…

Lisa Montelione blasts opponent Shawn Harrison’s anti-abortion House vote

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida House of Representatives candidate Lisa Montelione is criticizing her opponent, incumbent Representative Shawn Harrison, for his “direct attack” on women’s health. Harrison was one of nine Republicans in the House to vote for House Bill 1411 in the Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee. The bill would block public funding to any health care facilities that also provide abortions. “Yesterday’s vote by Shawn Harrison was a direct attack on health care access for the women of Florida and is part of a…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Pro-abortion rights Democratic organization Ruth’s List included seven 2016 Florida House and Senate candidates on its “Women 2 Watch” list last week, which puts them in line for financial and campaign support. The only Senate candidate on the list so far is Lauren Book. Since filing for the seat in September, the District 33 candidate has had a string of blockbuster fundraising months and, through December, has more than $1.2 million cash-on-hand across her campaign and committee accounts. The group…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Fundraising totals for what should be the ultracompetitive House District 63 seat were reported on Monday, and so far GOP incumbent Shawn Harrison is dominating the financial arms race over the two Democrats who have entered the contest. Harrison, obviously primed for a serious challenge come November, has now raised over $100,000, in the race ($100,300 to be precise), including an impressive $31,700 in December, often considered to be a slow month for fundraising. “Thank you all for all of your help…

Those options include bus rapid transit, light rail and commuter rail. HART has been assigned to conduct the study, and FDOT has allocated $1 million dollars and about 12 to 14 months for it. Ming Gao with FDOT went before the MPO to discuss how…

Shawn Harrison says Eric Eisnaugle’s plan to rely on votes from future classes to win Speakership is why he flipped to Chris Sprowls

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Shawn Harrison wants to make it clear that he still very much likes Eric Eisnaugle, his colleague in the Florida House. What Harrison did last week was business, not personal. But with his decision to shift his support from Eisnaugle to Pinellas Republican Chris Sprowls, Harrison has changed the narrative about who will be Speaker of the Florida House in 2021-22. As first reported last week by FloridaPolitics.com, Harrison issued a statement that he had changed his pledge to Sprowls after claiming an iron-clad…

Mitch Perry Report for 12.1.15 — Corizon Health Care terminates contract with Florida prisons. That’s not a bad thing

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

If you don’t know of anyone who is caught up in the Florida corrections system, stories about the care of prisoners may not matter much to you at all. But they have been disturbing, particularly regarding the state of health care for those who incarcerated. Rick Scott ran for office in 2010 promising to privatize health care in the corrections system in Florida, and that finally happened in October of 2013, when Corizon Health Care took over (along with Wexford…
