Tampa Bay bullpen falters again in late-inning loss to Mets

in Sports/Top Headlines by

When a team’s biggest strength becomes a weakness, it means trouble. The bullpen of the Tampa Bay Rays, the best thing about the team this season, faltered for the second straight game Friday night, losing a 4-3 game when both Jake McGee and Brad Boxberger gave up runs, a rarity. Boxberger took the loss, giving up three hits, an error and a wild pitch in the ninth inning. He also gave up two runs. Had Boxberger shut down New York,…

Rays’ Nathan Karns provides the pitching, hitting his team needs

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Rays had been struggling with their starting pitching. Nathan Karns cured that. They had been struggling with the bats, too. Karns cured that, as well. Karns had one of those memorable do-it-all games Tuesday night, throwing five shutout innings of three-hit baseball and hitting a solo home run in the third inning to lead the Rays to a 1-0 lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. For the Rays, it was the first time this season a pitcher has…

The general manager is new. The manager is new. Most of the players just got here. Carl Crawford omitted as Fox picks Rays ‘Franchise 4’

in Sports/Top Headlines by

No Wade Boggs. No Fred McGriff. Especially, no Carl Crawford. When Fox-TV announced its “Franchise Four” list Tuesday night, they didn’t spend a lot of time looking through the history of the Tampa Bay Rays, or the Devil of the franchise that came before them. The best Rays of the Rays have come in the last decade, and Fox concentrated on those years. The picks: Former pitcher James Shields, former pitcher David Price, former second-baseman Ben Zobrist and current third…
