Jeff Brandes says he’s had enough, and will propose legislation to kill the Hillsborough County PTC

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Jeff Brandes says he’s mad as hell, and doesn’t want to take it anymore. The St. Petersburg-based Republican state senator wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday that he will propose legislation next year that will attempt to eliminate the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission. His statement comes a day after the controversial agency announced that despite the fact that a Hillsborough judge had denied its request for a preliminary injunction against Uber last week, it would continue to write tickets citing Uber and Lyft drivers…

Good morning, happy 11th anniversary of Hurricane Charley. Charley, as those of us who were here remember, was the first of four hurricanes that descended upon Florida in August and September of 2004. It was going to be the “new normal,” we all fretted. Major storms every summer. Since that time there were a couple that came through in 2005, with the worst being Wilma in October in South Florida. And since then? Nada. Not that that’s reflected in your…

Despite court ruling, Hillsborough PTC agents will continue to cite Uber drivers

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Despite a court ruling that rejected their request that could have prevented Uber from operating in Hillsborough County, the Public Transportation Commission agreed today that they could continue to issue citations against Uber (and Lyft) drivers. “It is our opinion that there is nothing in Judge Huey’s order that prevents the PTC from continuing its enforcement actions against Uber,  should the commission decide to take that action,” PTC attorney Cindy Oster told the board. “Currently our director has been enforcing our rules and regs…

Hillsborough PTC head emphasizes he doesn’t want Uber to leave Tampa

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission executive director Kyle Cockream wants to emphasize to the public that his agency has never wanted to boot Uber from operating in the country. He just wants them to abide by a few of the agency’s rules, which the popular ridesharing company has indicated it’s not interested in. On Friday, a Hillsborough County Circuit Court Judge denied the PTC’s request for a preliminary injunction that could have possibly taken Uber drivers off of local roads. “Interestingly, the PTC stated that…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.16.15 — Jeb Bush goes to Uber

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Jeb Bush is in San Francisco today, where he plans on hailing an Uber to show his support for the ride-sharing company. His appearance comes a day after California regulators required the company to pay a $7.3 million fine and hand over required information about safety and accessibility — or be shut down in their home state. The California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates taxis and shuttle companies, asked Uber, Lyft and Sidecar to report the number of customers requesting rides in vehicles that can…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.11.15 — Picking winners and losers in Tallahassee

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times’ lead today is a story that we touched upon briefly yesterday as the Legislature is now half-way through its special session in Tallahassee — that being the very real fears among movers and shakers in Tampa that state funding for a USF College of Medicine building ($17 million) and accompanying USF Heart Institute ($15.75 million) is in peril. There is a dispute about whether the projects should be bonded, since legislators say there’s not enough funding to pay for the projects…

Hillsborough County PTC promises deregulation of some rules regarding Uber and Lyft

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Having survived a proposal in the Legislature that would have prevented them from making any rule changes to regulate Uber and Lyft, Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission executive director Kyle Cockream said today that he will soon be recommending the “deregulation of some of our rules that we have.” The two ride-sharing companies have been out of compliance with PTC regulations since they both began operating in the county over a year ago. Since that time, the PTC has held…
