Corey Dickerson named AL All-Star starter; Logan Morrison in Final Vote

in Sports by

Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter Corey Dickerson has been voted into the American League starting lineup for this year’s All-Star Game. He will join baseball’s best in Miami on July 11. Dickerson trailed Seattle’s Nelson Cruz since balloting began a month ago, but came on strong to take a 60,000-vote lead when Major League Baseball announced the final update this week. Balloting closed on Thursday night, and the entire team was announced Sunday. Dickerson is having the best season of…

Rays look to re-stock talent pool with MLB Draft

in Sports by

With far less fanfare and the hoopla that surrounds the NFL Draft, Major League Baseball will conduct the first two rounds of their version beginning Monday. The Tampa Bay Rays have the fourth overall pick. Drafting that high, Tampa Bay has several “can’t miss” prospects from which to choose. That does not guarantee the next star player, but they have had some success over the decade. Melvin E. (B.J.) Upton was their top pick in 2002, followed by Delmon Young…

Rays’ win in Texas caps winning month of May

in Sports by

Did Wednesday’s game in Arlington against the Texas Rangers signal a turning point for the Tampa Bay Rays? While there is no question the dramatic 7-5, 10-inning comeback win was the highlight of the season, it is still only one win. A better barometer is established using a larger sample size. The signs are good for Tampa Bay. A quality team must win on the road, or at least break even. The win in Texas brought the Rays’ overall road…

Tie score in Legislature could leave Tampa Bay Rays big winners

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

With that, Lee’s bill was officially called out on strikes this Session. Supporting Lee (who is not on the…

The Camden Effect: At 25, ballpark’s legacy is large in MLB

in Sports/Top Headlines by

A quarter-century later, Larry Lucchino can be self-deprecating about a vision that ushered in a new era of ballpark construction. “I tell everyone I’ve had one good, original idea in my 38 years in baseball,” said Lucchino, whose career as an executive has included stints with Baltimore, San Diego and Boston. “It was to build a traditional, old-fashioned ballpark with modern amenities, intimacy and irregularity.” It sounds so simple the way Lucchino describes it, and he insists the Orioles weren’t…

Joe Henderson: Miami trial shines light on smuggling Cuban baseball players to U.S.

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It is not unusual when a Major League Baseball team signs a Cuban defector. There is a lengthy list of players who fled that island nation so they could barter their skills for the considerable cash that comes with playing in the United States. Usually, those stories have been treated as valiant escapes from a repressive government and the search for a better life. A trial that concluded Wednesday in a Miami courtroom though painted a different story. Instead of…

Kevin Cash, other managers apprehensive about WBC

in Sports by

Major League Baseball managers and front offices are less than thrilled with the semi-annual World Baseball Classic (WBC), but they understand the attempt to promote the game across the globe. The two problems major league teams confront is the disruption of spring training and injuries. The disruption can last for a few days or for two weeks, depending on how long a player’s team lasts in the tournament. The WBC begins Monday in certain venues around the world. First round…
