Four weeks after his stunning upset in the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s race, Andrew Warren has announced his first two hires to his incoming administration, and one of them is a fellow Democrat who was on the ballot last month. Rena Upshaw-Frazier, a partner at Quarrels and Brady and a candidate who lost in her bid to defeat Ross Spano in the House District 59 race last month, will serve as the chief of policy and communications, while attorney Gary Weisman will serve…

In wake of loss to Donald Trump, Hillsborough County Democrats get surge of requests to join their party

At their first event since being devastated by the results of the presidential election, there was literally not enough room to contain the number of Democrats who showed up at the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee meeting in Ybor City Monday night. A second room adjoining the main boardroom at the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County facility was opened to contain the overflow crowd. “We’ve been inundated since the election,” said Ione Townsend, the chair of the Hillsborough County DEC. Although officially only 14…

Jonny Torres, currently vice chair of the Hillsborough County Republican Executive Committee, has announced he will challenge incumbent chair Deborah Tamargo when the party holds elections next month. Although the GOP had a big night nationally and in Florida last week, Torres said the results out of Hillsborough were disappointing, and he believes it’s time for a change in leadership. “Today, we bear little resemblance to the organization we once were,” Torres wrote to party members on Wednesday. “Those of you…

It was a super-close ending, but Andrew Warren’s victory over incumbent Mark Ober for Hillsborough County state attorney represents the upset of the year in Hillsborough politics in 2016. The 40-year-old former federal prosecutor quit his job approximately a year ago with the Justice Department to commit himself to a dedicated effort to topple Ober, a Republican initially elected in 2000, and rarely, if ever, challenged by Democrats ever since. “We’re really excited by the outcome,” said Warren on Wednesday. “We were…

Where do you begin? One of the biggest political upsets in U.S. history, to start with, in Donald J. Trump beating Hillary Clinton to become the 45th President of the United States of America. Lots of analysis there, including about the Democratic nominee, who for the second time in eight years, thought she had the presidency in her grasp, only to lose out — forever. What about closer to home? Although Florida Democrats have had huge disappointments in 2010 and 2014…

Warren received  50.41 percent to  Ober’s 49.59 percent, a difference of 4,719 votes. Ober has been the State Attorney since 2000, and has rarely even faced a Democrat in his subsequent re-election bids. Warren is a former federal prosecutor who left the Justice Department late last year to commit himself to defeating Ober. He proved early on that he was serious by staying almost even…

Mitch Perry Report for 11.7.16 — Closing arguments

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In this space on Friday, we reminisced about October surprises in previous election cycles before referring to the dual bombshells that have rocked this year’s presidential election: First, the release of that 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape in which Donald Trump spoke lewdly about women, followed 10 days ago with the announcement of the discovery of hundreds of thousands of emails that could be related to the FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton‘s potential violation of national security documents. We surmised the surprises were over, but…
