At “Souls to the Polls” event, Mark Ober meets up with a man he once defended on murder charges

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Before he was elected Hillsborough County State Attorney in 2000, Mark Ober spent the previous thirteen years working as a criminal defense attorney, in which he represented all types of the citizenry. One of them happened to be Gerald Walden, who was charged with murder in the early 1990’s. Walden was found guilty, and spent the past two decades plus in a variety of correctional facilities before being released last month from Polk Correctional on controlled release. As Ober was making a campaign stop in…

Realtors backs David Singer in HD 60 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Greater Tampa Realtors unveiled their list of endorsements in the upcoming election on Tuesday, and one of their most provocative selections is choosing Democrat David Singer over Republican Jackie Toledo in the House District 60 campaign. The Realtors made 20 selections in all: 10 Republicans, six Democrats, and four candidates running in nonpartisan races. All of the Democrats, except one, the Realtors are backing are incumbents or, in some cases, running in open seats where they are heavily favored: CD 14 Rep. Kathy Castor, SD 19 Senate…

Mitch Perry Report for 10.25.16 – DCCC ad linking Trump to Jolly goes away, but has the damage been done?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Attention political junkies: not every voter pays attention to politics until right before the election, which is why that ad by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee “dramatizing” David Jolly standing with Donald Trump was so egregious. The ad — one of the most controversial of any produced this season in American politics — was immediately denounced by the Jolly campaign, who protested to local television stations to stop airing it. They did not. Nor did his Democratic opponent, Charlie Crist, say anything negative when called to denounce it…

Mitch Perry Report for 10.19.16 — Will Chris Wallace find debate fodder in WikiLeaks?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Chris Wallace has been laying low over the past week, bypassing his normal turn as host of Fox News Sunday as he prepared to host tonight’s final presidential debate from the Thomas & Mack Center on the University of Las Vegas campus (though a photo of his mug continues to be prominently featured on virtually every Fox broadcast). Like any solid reporter, he’s undoubtedly been hunkered down preparing the best questions to pose to the candidates tonight. But let’s be honest. He’s also…

Widow of slain Tampa police officer vouches for Mark Ober in new ad

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In June 2010, Tampa police officers David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab were shot and killed by Dontae Morris, who now faces the death penalty for his actions. In Hillsborough County State Attorney Mark Ober’s new ad, Kelly Curtis-Stout, Officer Curtis’ widow, explains why she’s one victim who’s standing for Ober in his re-election campaign. “During the darkest days of my life, Mark Ober stood with me, fought for me, protected me,” Curtis-Stout says in the ad.” He has tremendous compassion for victims. I…

Mitch Perry Report for 10.18.16 — Amy Schumer not the 1st liberal comic to alienate her fans in Tampa

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Amy Schumer isn’t the only major comic whose liberal schtick ended up alienating some Tampa residents who coughed up big money for a night’s entertainment. In 2003 Bill Maher gave an eviscerating takedown of George W. Bush at the Straz Theatre (still known then simply as the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center). It was just months after the “successful” invasion of Iraq. It was well before things went truly south for the U.S. and western forces there, and in our popular…

Local faith leaders demand Tampa Bay-area prosecutors stop seeking death penalty

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

A week after a national study singled out Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties as outliers in advocating for death penalty cases, a coalition of religious figures spoke out in Tampa Monday to demand that the state attorneys in those two jurisdictions, Pinellas’ Bernie McCabe and Hillsborough’s Mark Ober, cease calling for any further capital cases. “The moment is here. It’s our opportunity as faith leaders and as people of good will across the state of Florida, particularly Tampa Bay, to say it’s…
