in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Republican Mark Ober picked up an endorsement from former Florida Gov. Bob Martinez and his wife Tuesday in the race for State Attorney in the 13th Judicial Circuit. “We first met and supported Mark Ober for State Attorney in 2000. Mark and his talented team are professional in carrying out their duties as prosecutors,” the former governor said. “Mark is fair, honest and ethical as he carries out his prosecutorial responsibilities. We have been well served with Mark Ober as…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.21.16 – Will Hillsborough adopt Palm Beach law regarding Uber and Lyft?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Some quick hits before I hop on a plane… I know much of our news media would rather spend another day focusing on our national elections, what about what’s going on the world? A U.N. agency said yesterday that up to 500 may have died last week, when a large boat packed with migrants from Africa and the Middle East capsized in an unknown location between Libya and Italy. The BBC reports that over 179,000 migrants have arrived in Europe in 2016 alone.…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Just in case anyone thought otherwise, Mark Ober wants people to know he works hard at his job as Hillsborough County State Attorney. “It is a full-time job,” he told approximately 80 people who attended the Hillsborough County Republican Executive Committee meeting Tuesday night at MOSI in North Tampa. “I live and breathe the office of State Attorney, and I need your help.” Ober is finishing out the last year of his fourth term as Hillsborough County State Attorney, and he’s now running…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.14.16 – So who wants to go to Cleveland this summer?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Why do Hillsborough County State Attorney employees even need “key cards”? That’s the question I have after reading the Anna Phillips/Windy March penned story in the Times this morning (and Elaine Silvestrini’s in the Trib). Their story revolves around an allegation made about Mark Ober’s work ethic by his Democratic party challenger, Andrew Warren. Records unearthed by his campaign revealed that Ober only used his key card five times in March, but the GOP incumbent says he “often comes to work and leaves…

Mitch Perry Report 4.7.16 – Gay Talese, meet Twitter

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Gay Talese is one of the great American reporters of our time. Now 84, Talese was considered part of the New Journalism that took the country by storm in the 1960s. I’m going to write about his new book in a moment, but I confess that I’m a little late to the party regarding the contretemps he started up last weekend. That’s when he was asked at a conference at Boston University about women writers who had inspired him and replied,…

Andrew Warren again raises more than Mark Ober in Hillsborough State Attorney race

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Hillsborough County Democratic State Attorney hopeful Andrew Warren raised more money than GOP incumbent Mark Ober for the third consecutive time last month, and his campaign is making sure everybody knows it. The Warren campaign announced on Tuesday that the former federal prosecutor raised $44,000 last month, compared with Ober’s $41,990. “I can’t thank our community enough for their continued support,” Warren said in a prepared statement. “I told them I needed their help to continue my service for Hillsborough families, and they stepped…

Go Hillsborough cleared of ethics violations, yet many questions remain

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although an extensive review of a “Go Hillsborough” contract award cleared the project of ethics violations, several unanswered questions remain. In a nearly 2,000-page report, both the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and State Attorney Mark Ober found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by county staff, commissioners or consultant Beth Leytham before awarding the profitable transportation expansion study to Parsons Brinckerhoff, Leytham’s client. Nevertheless, Noah Pransky of WTSP says the investigation corroborates earlier findings that show Leytham’s regular practice of behind-the-scenes…
