Mitch Perry Report for 8.20.15 — The 1% solution for a Hillsborough County transportation tax

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The news that the Go Hillsborough campaign has reintroduced the prospect of the Hillsborough transportation tax going from a half-cent to a full penny apparently alienated a few county commissioners, who didn’t get a heads-up that County Administrator Mike Merrill was about to do that on Monday. So now that they’ve got that out of their system, I’m curious as to what will be the magic moment that convinces Merrill and consultant Parsons Brinckerhoff to tell the Policy Leadership Group that…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.1.15 — The politics of envy and being relatable

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Envy is considered one of the seven deadly sins in Christianity. It’s something that would be ideal if we didn’t occasionally suffer from, but it’s all too human for us to do so. I don’t know if it’s something I read or heard years ago, but when it comes to money (like sex), I always have tried to take the notion that it’s only one’s own that one should be concerned with. Otherwise one could go mad, bemoaning the fact…

Despite Rick Scott rejection, Mark Sharpe says Tampa Innovation Alliance is right on course

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Among the many local projects that didn’t escape Rick Scott’s veto pen last week was $2 million earmarked for the Tampa Innovation Alliance, the nascent public-private agency charged with redeveloping the university area of North Tampa. But Mark Sharpe, the agency’s executive director, insists that it’s not a big deal. He says the organization never envisioned receiving state money at all in its first year of operations, and instead hoped to simply capture the attention of the Hillsborough County Commission. The County…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There were some local projects of note in the Tampa Bay area that escaped Rick Scott’s veto pen Tuesday morning, but there were plenty of other local projects and programs that did not, all part of $461 million in vetoes announced by the governor’s office. Winners included USF, which received $17 million for its Morsani College of Medicine move to downtown Tampa, and $12.3 million for completing the construction of USF St. Petersburg’s Kate Tiedemann College of Business. Also $1.5 million for Clearwater…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Former Tampa City Council member Mary Mulhern says she is “investigating” running for political office in 2016, and that includes the possibility of moving to Pinellas County this summer to compete for the CD 13 congressional seat currently held by Republican David Jolly. “I’ve been crunching numbers for months, and networking, and talking to people at all levels of government in Pinellas County, and here (in Hillsborough County), so it’s a definite possibility,” Mulhern told Florida Politics on Thursday night. “But…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Plant City Republican Josh Burgin, who has served on the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) since February of 2012, officially announced today that he will be stepping down from the agency on July 1, as he pursues a degree from the Harvard School of Government. “Three years ago, you gave me a specific charge to ‘protect the taxpayer,’” Burgin wrote last week to Gov. Rick Scott, who appointed him to the board. “I took that directive seriously and worked…

Ken Hagan looking at possible run for Tampa mayor in 2019

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Longtime Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan says he’s considering a run for mayor of Tampa in 2019. “I’m encouraged everyday to consider running for either mayor of Tampa or a constitutional seat,” Hagan said on Tuesday. Having just been re-elected to his District 5 countywide Commission seat last year, he admits he’s not in any hurry to consider running for any new office, but confesses that “it’s definitely something I’m going to take a look at.” The 47-year-old Tampa native…
