Critics think Florida had motives for not playing the LSU game

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Evidently, some people think the Florida Gators should have taken on LSU’s Tigers and a hurricane over the weekend. How else do you explain the reaction the Gators got for suspending their game? There are those who suggested the Gators didn’t want to play the game. Why else wouldn’t Florida have moved the game to Baton Rouge? Why wouldn’t Florida travel to the ends of the earth to play the game? “Nineteen deaths, 2.5 million people without power,” said Gators…

Gators’ defense re-establishes itself in win over Vanderbilt

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Once again, defense. The Florida Gators’ defensive unit, a week after giving up too many big plays and too many points against Tennessee, was outstanding in a 13-6 victory over Vanderbilt Saturday. The Gators held Vandy to only two field goals, and snuffed their final threat away with an interception by Nick Washington after Jarrad Davis tipped the pass. The Gators didn’t show much offense, however, as coach Jim McElwain kept his game plan conservative with backup Austin Appleby playing.…

Quarterback Luke Del Rio injured in solid win over North Texas

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Florida Gators may still be trying to work out their offense. But the defense seems set. Florida, which entered the day with the No. 2 total defense in the nation, held North Texas to only 53 yards of total offense in an easy 32-0 victory. That victory ended with a question mark, however, as starting quarterback Luke Del Rio limped off with an injured left knee after being hit low on a pass rush. Florida coach Jim McElwain was…

Finally, Florida names Luke Del Rio its starting quarterback

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It was either the worst-kept secret in the world or the world’s slowest announcement. Either way, Luke Del Rio is the man in charge of the Florida Gators’ offense. Del Rio, a redshirt sophomore, had spent more time than anyone running with the ones, and he did the most damage in the spring game. Even new consultant Steve Spurrier said the job belonged to Del Rio, the son of the Oakland Raiders’ coach. Finally, Jim McElwain has joined the chorus and announced Del Rio will start…

Can Gators have an improved offense behind Luke Del Rio?

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Will a comeback be possible against Tennessee this time? Will a new quarterback take the Gators’ offense in his hands this year? Will the Gators be able to steamroll Ole Miss this season? By now, we are accustomed to believing that the  Florida Gators will be good on defense. But can Florida hold up on offense this time around? It couldn’t last year, not after Will Grier was suspended for PEDs. But coach Jim McElwain thinks his program has made progress this year. At quarterback, adviser Steve…

Florida’s college football teams must have better passing attacks in ’16

in Sports/Top Headlines by

They can block. They can tackle. They can run like the wind. But when it comes to your favorite college football team this season, you have one simple question. Can they pass? And, for heaven sakes, can they do it better than they did it ago. Everyone wants to be better, right? Everyone wants to win bigger. But for the teams of Florida, the question is whether the passing attacks from last year can be better this year. Consider Florida…

Gators faced with meager expectations in Jim McEwain’s second year

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Turns out, the Florida Gators have even more to prove. Florida, picked to finish near the bottom of the SEC a year ago, probably won’t be picked quite as low as it was last year. But when Sports Illustrated picked its top 25 teams after college football’s spring practice, well, the Gators were nowhere to be found. FSU was third. Even Miami was 24th. But Florida just made the “also considered” list. The reason is probably similar to what it was a year ago.…
