Jim DeMint backs Marco Rubio

in Statewide by

Conservative Sen. Jim DeMint’s backing of Marco Rubio in the Florida Senate race is the latest salvo in an internal Republican struggle over who will lead the way in salvaging the GOP’s damaged brand. On Tuesday, the South Carolina Republican will endorse Rubio, a 38-year-old former state House speaker, bucking the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s endorsement of Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, a moderate who has periodically found himself at odds with right-wing elements of his party. National Republicans argue that…

Kendrick Meek has been raking in the tobacco dollars, according to The Center for Responsive Politics. John Cornyn responds directly on Red State blog re: NRSC endorsement of Crist

in Statewide by

Senator John Cornyn posted directly on Red State: “While this political environment appears dire and presents short-term setbacks for Republicans, I believe that it also provides us with a real opportunity for 2010. Next November could be a turning point for the future of our Party – but only if we unite and take advantage of this critical opportunity. That means holding the Democrats accountable for their records, providing real solutions, reaching out to new constituencies, and fielding candidates who…

Huff Post: GOP’s other Latino problem

in Statewide by

From Chris Weigant: I wrote yesterday about the political conundrum Republicans (especially those in the Senate who actually get to vote on her confirmation) find themselves in over Sotomayor. It seems these days, Republicans just can’t attempt to do anything right without landing themselves in hot water as a…

in Statewide by

From Mark Scott, editor of the Washington Examiner’s Editorial Page: Things really came to a head when the NRSC’s chairman, Sen. John Cornyn, R-TX, endorsed Florida Gov. Charlie Crist to succeed the retiring Sen. Mel Martinez. Crist actively supported President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus package, and has signed multiple tax hikes. Cornyn’s endorsement came despite the well-known plans of popular conservative Marco Rubio, the dynamic young speaker of the Florida House, to seek the Martinez seat. An interncecine war between…

CQ: Populist outrage and pragmatic recruiting a volatile mix for GOP

in Statewide by

From CQ: Republican officials, groping for a formula to revive their party, have been firing up their conservative activist base with support for “tea parties” that skewer big government, and rhetoric that brands President Barack Obama’s Democratic Party as “Socialist.” At the same time, though, GOP strategists have been working to recruit candidates for key 2010 elections who project more moderate images — which might draw them support across party lines and make them, at least in theory, more “electable.”…

National Journal: Charlie Crist Holds the Cards

in Statewide by

Name recognition is a must for a statewide candidate in Florida. But in such a large state, that’s expensive. With the faltering economy squeezing would-be primary contenders for the 2010 Senate race, the focus for the next 18 months is likely to stay on Gov. Charlie Crist (R) and Rep. Kendrick Meek (D). For now, advantage Crist. There is no incumbent in the scramble to replace retiring Sen. Mel Martinez (R), but Crist might as well be: The popular governor…
